Only reason I'd buy a Mac was if the price:performance was significantly better than a PC.

i really think theyd make more money if they sold the OS for system builders, i mean it seems like only 1 out of 20 people have macs and probably 5-10 of those 20 are builders that might like the OS on their hardware

I use Mac/OSX alot in school (SoundDesigner). Mainly use them for studiorecording and editing together with Pro Tools.
But everytime I have to use the Finder to browse through my files, I look at my laptop PC and thinks that Windows Explorer isn't a bad file browser after all

Apart from the cool and sleek design and lack of viruses, I really don't see why I should switch.

muCommander really does improve browsing around the OS X system. I use PowerDesk Pro 5 in Windows cause I don't like Explorer that much either. I prefer dual-pane file management.

http://www.mucommander.com/

Free, and works good on OS X.

In Finder, I can't seem to get it to maintain column widths even. It drives me nuts. Having to basically re-arrange things every time you open it. Very annoying.

Hmm I look at my previous post about two months ago, saying that I wouldn't consider getting a Mac. But now I'm actually considering just that.

It's the only laptop I know of where you get both firewire 400 AND 800. And with fullsize 6-pin and 9-pin ports also.

The downsize is of course the price and Finder, but I think I could live with that.

I will be for almost 100% certainly be buying a mac when Leopard is released. Using a Mac @ work for 8 hours a day then come home i find my self being dissapointed with my OS Vista was OK for a bit, but apps crash daily on Vista 64-bit.

Its time to buy a mac for day to day tasks, then use a PC only when i want to game/overclock.

and Gardinen, i find Finder much easier to use than Windows Explorer. Not having a C:, etc is soo much hassle free too.

Hmm...well I think it's just a matter of getting used to the Finder. We have Macs at my school but ever since I got my Dell laptop I don't use their computers anymore, just my own. So I haven't been using the Finder that much.

But still...I'm also thinking of getting a Mac when Leapord is released.

I am sure you'll come to enjoy it. As long as you know your way around, or can learn your way around the OS, it is a great machine.

I was just messing around with my mothers mac book which she just purchased. Slick little machine, plus I set up a dual boot to XP, so you can have that too. If I had the loot and were in the market, I'd consider a mac.

from what i understand, you *should* be able to set that one button to act as two, iirc it's sensitive to where it's touched - and if set in the system preferences, can act as two buttons

You can but Apple still being of the single-button mind has it disabled for some reason. It is easy to turn on though. Go into your System Prefences/Ketboard & Mouse and change the right button to Secondary Button.

Would i contemplate buying a mac?
As a secondary system for dedicated photoshop work maybe, if it was free yeah, but if it was my money at stake then nah..
I've liked the macbooks for a while though, wouldn't buy one still :P

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

What frustrates me is the hard to upgrade systems, plus the laptop hardware in their Mac Mini and iMac models. I also hate that they do not offer any affordable quad-core desktop solution.

I use OSX for about 95% of my work, at work, and have been using it at home for nearly 2 years now on a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook.

What keeps me drawn to Windows is the attractive hardware. For $1199 - I can build myself an AMD Phenom II 940 (3GHz Quad Core) system with 8GB ram, two 640GB WD Black hard drives, 4870x2 video card, motherboard, case, 850W Corsair PSU, and DVD+-RW drive.

The most powerful Mac I can buy at that price is a refurbished 2008 iMac that has a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo, 320GB (non-upgradable) hard drive, 256MB ATI 2600 Pro video card, build-in 24" LCD.

I love the OS X operating system, far better than Windows. But, as a hardware nerd, their systems don't do anything for me. I looked at the new Mac Mini with hopes of being able to upgrade it to 8GB ram, but nope - Apple designed it do it can not address more than 4GB ram. The iMac is $2000 for the only new system I might consider, but $2K for a Dual-Core system? Like the new Mac Pro, but it is way way too expensive for me to even consider.

I agree for most parts. I don't like don't have a mid-range upgradable desktop available. The gap between the Mini and the Pro is huge.

I'm definitely torn. I'm a hardware geek - I live and breathe hardware news, which I check all day and night to stay on the cutting edge. Apple's hardware, for the most part, is generally based on outdated laptop hardware.

My problem is that I have become hooked on OSX. I love doing most of my stuff on a Mac, but ripping/encoding video absolutely sucks on my 2.16 GHz Macbook w/ 2GB of RAM and the intergrated Intel GMA 950 graphics. Using Handbrake (to rip/convert video to my iPhone) takes forever, and my Mac fans are spinning at 100% the entire 20+ minutes while it is doing its thing.

Maybe a faster Mac would help out, but, the prices are scary.

As a hardware junkie, I know that for $1150 I can build this:
AMD Phenom II 940 (3.0 GHz Quad Core)
SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 2GB GDDR5
ASUS M4A79 Deluxe AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX
8GB G.SKILL PI Black 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800
Two 640GB Western Digital Black Series Hard Drives
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Case
CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W PSU

I know with that I can have a far more powerful machine for video editing, doing my Photoshop CS4, running VMs, ripping/encoding video, and other tasks. I already have a 22" LCD monitor.

Then I think - gee, then I am stuck with Vista 64-bit until Windows 7 Ultimate comes out. I been using Vista Business 64-bit since February/March '07 on my Dell workstation, which has 8GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo. It has never given me any issues in the two years that I have been using it, but I do find the OS X user experience to be far more enjoyable.

The whole user experience, interface, and fluidity of the OS X is night and day better than Vista. I have been testing out Windows 7 Ultimate on a fresh partition on the Dell, and while it is far far better than the Vista experience, it's still not as good as OS X.

This is what makes me torn. It's either piss poor old hardware with an amazing OS, or a piss poor OS with amazing hardware.

That is why I use multiple computers. My MBP w/ an Intel SSD is plenty quick enough for almost everything. But for encoding/gaming I use a PC.

Maybe I'll sit back until the new AMD Phenom II 955 is released on April 20th, then make my decision. Go with the Windows system first, then get a Mac Mini later.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

I don't see any reason to, it doesn't offer me anything the PC doesn't. I think people sometimes worry too much about operating systems and less about why they have a computer in the first place.

You buy a computer to serve a purpose, be it gaming, word processing, internet whatever, you don't buy a computer because it has Windows, or OSX, or Linux in the same way that you don't buy a drill because you want a drill, you buy a drill because you want a hole!

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

I'd love to check out Mac OS, but don't see myself buying a Mac just for that. However, if the hardware itself is good, I might be willing to pay a premium for that. The Mini has always caught my eye, and now that it has NVIDIA graphics it's more appealing. I still think I'll wait for a Blu-Ray version to come out. A nice "netbook" style Mac might also be attractive for me.

Still, I'm not really planning to buy either of these currently, even if they were out. A new PC would be enough for now.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

If the rumours of the MacBook Mini are correct, I'd certainly be tempted to get it.

(Hmm, further checking shows it comes from a print magazine, and looks like a review. Because of this, I assume it's an April Fool's article.)
