ATI driver 5.6, TV capture problem

ATI AIW 9800 Pro using DVI; ASUS P4S800D-E deluxe (most recent drivers/bios); 1024MB, 1 ide and 1 sata HD with lots of empty space.
XP SP2 updated; No power rail or temp problems. Audigy card removed just in case, using onboard audio. No reported IRQ or memory conflicts.

Following ATI's instructions to the T, updating from year old drivers and programs causes TV capture to freeze after 5-15 minutes. All other programs are still fully functional, except the screen areas where TV was displayed isn't refreshed with the desktop, only with most recent opened window. Task manager doesn't stop the TV and I must hard restart. Going back to original release I have no problems. In addition, I have used various registry analysers/cleaners and manually cleaned out all ATI registry entries I could find to no avail. I think I've tried about 20 of the above procedures , all with the same result.

I'd keep the old version except some of my recent game acquisitions won't run properly as they do with the new drivers. Installing old mmc over ccc5.6 wasn't allowed. ATI support hasn't responded with anything usefull ("something's wrong with your computer or software") yet. I've been googling the web and newsgroups for about a month and haven't found anything but a vague reference to "known compatability problems" with my board.

I don't know what to try next. Any suggestions? Thanks

System Specs

Go back to 5.4 / MMC 9.06.1, works like a charm for me

Splinter Cell: CT won't allow certain viewing modes with your suggestion, but thanks. ATI is spending all of it's money trying to one-up nVideo for gamers' blessings while most users could care less if we can play games at 50 or 80 fps. Hard-core gamers are co-opting the "ratings" of video cards. Other considerations are more important, like support.
