Sad ATI AIW 9600 WDM Driver Won't Install/Register

After updating the BIOS on my A7V8XX, loading the newest 4-in-1 PCI, NIC and AGP controller drivers, getting the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, cleaning the registry with Ace, and doing every version of tear down to the bare metal, step-by-step, mind numbing, spirit robbing, inner child killing installation variation I've read about, including the one where you sacrifice a live chicken to the pagen Gods of Vid Drivers, I still can't get the WDM capture drivers to load/register. Everything else is fine. Without the WDM Capture drivers however, I can't get the adapter to play out the S-vid to my TV correctly...and the ATI system checker's only compalint is that the WDM capture drivers aren't loaded or registered. Since I haven't seen anyone else in the various tech forums mention any problems like this, I'm assuming it's my "good luck" at work here.

So, I'm really thinking it's not something obvious, but I HAVE made that assumption incorrectly in the past, There's SO many details on all the things I've tried that I'm reluctant to post it all here. Can anyone think of anything right off hand that would prevent the capture driver to fail to register, yet all the other catalyst components install fine and seem to work fine. I'm thinking that there's something lurking in the registry, or something related to my Samsung monitor or my Gina soundcard that's lurking in the bushes here.

If this is going to require the whole "enchilada" of my system run-down, I'd be glad to post it here, but I was hoping someone would say "Oh yeh...my buddy Billy Joe Bob had the same problem last week and he found a fishing lure stuck to his mother board...bet that's it!"

<HEAVY sigh....This one is SERIOUSLY messing with my head after several WEEKS of periodically doing the installation over again with some added "twist" I've heard about"...>

If you can help me...bless you!

assuming you've dome the standard - uninstall drivers, clean with DriverCleaner, install WDM then display then control panel . . . the next question is how about a fresh install of Windows? If you've upgraded from another card, it's generally recommended you start fresh.

God...I am having the same problems with my 9800 Pro. I laughed so hard at your post that I now feel a bit better about my problem. I promise you, if I don't drop my computer from high altitude first, when I get it fixed, I will let you know asap. Keep smiling.

Dagrizz2u,

Did you ever resolved your issue w/ WDM capture? I'm having the same problem. Although I'm seriously contemplating of starting from 'clean slate' for my PC- by reinstalling everything (it will be a pain)... but for now, i'm holding up on that. I've done every uninstall, driver cleaner, reinstall, etc.. but still no luck.

I'm experiencing the same thing for the 4th time! I bought the ATI AIW 9600 almost a year ago. It worked perfectly at first, then after 3 months or so..poof..the t.v won't work and WDM drivers won't install properly.
I've done ALL the install options provided by ATI and tech tips on the 'net, nothing works.
I've returned it each time to my vendor and was provided a new card each time....Installed ok, then like I said earlier..poof...
Don't know what to say other than to return the card to where u bought it.
I also have a ATI AIW 7500 card and have never had ANY problems with it. However, it doesn't support the newer games and second monitor, which is why I bought the 9600.
Google this issue and u will get a gazillion links. I've used ATI cards since '95 and am seriously considering an alternate manufacturer unless ATI fixes their WDM issue. I's been ongoing way to long.

I've had the exact same trouble with my card. I bought it in August 2004, and the TV worked for a short time, but hasn't worked since September for me. I'm very frustrated by this and I've been trying to resolve the problem through tech support.

I've heard that it's possible to get it to work through Linux, but I'm not yet sure how. If that's true, I'll be spending more time in Linux after I get it installed.

Still, it disturbs me that ATI isn't really doing anything with a problem of this magnitude.

Configuration:
ASUS A7V8X Bios 1014, AMD Athlon 2000XP, 512 MB,
Windows XP SP2, VIA 4in1Drivers v4.49
ATI All-in-Wonder 9600XT 128MB, ATI WDM Drivers 6.14.10.6238

System Specs

I just went through a fresh install of XP Pro on a newly reformatted HD on my previous 98SE machine. (No, I really didn't 'want' to do it just yet, but that's another story for another thread.)

Anyway, I was having problems AFTER I tried to update the drivers from the original CD drivers for my AIW 9600 Series card. This is a B/B ATi card.

What was happening is that PC Check (ATi, PLEASE get this dadburn program working correctly -- PRETTY PLEASE) flew up all kinds of flags including that I didn't have a RADEON card installed. Doh! Isn't an AIW 9600 using Catalyst Drivers a RADEON??? Of course, it is! BUT, "RADEON" doesn't appear in the Device Manager title for the card, so, therefore it must NOT be a RADEON card. Oops!!

The main reason I ran the PC Check to begin with was that once the drivers all installed I got a "failed to initialize video (TV) capture" something or other.

I have finally gotten the card working again after the new XP Pro install. But, a couple of things ended up having to be done via SAFEMODE. So, if, for some reason the drivers aren't installing from normal Windows, try the Safemode option. I've even had to use this after copying the ATI CD contents to the hard drive under 98SE a few times.

Good luck!

I'm having the same problem with my ATI9600 card. I installed it last August and it worked great up until last month. Then all of a sudden it stopped capturing. I tried everything under the sun: updating drivers, varying the order in which the drivers are install, cleaning the registry, using ATI's utilities, even reformatting the drive. But I still have the same problem. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I haven't the guts nor have the time to do a reinstall of windows xp, sp2, and all other applications and drivers (i.e. ATI AIW9600) as of yet. After reading all other posts here, it's making me very uneasy about the purchase of this card. So far the TV, Capture is working. I'm still having issues with the "TV-on-demand" live tv recording/pausing- it keeps freezing the system. The TV PVR (scheduled programming, one touch recording) seem to be working thus far. I didnt opted to purchase the 'extended warranty' from comp usa, only what came w/ the box. So i'm quite concerned that i'm reading all the failures of the tuner after due time. I got this unit on December for my b-day, it is now Feb, so far, what has been working is still working (fingers crossed)-but now dreading the day when it suddenly just quits.

Why hasn't ATI addressed nor acknowledge this issue?

If i only knew that this was going to give me problems or a waste of money- i could have purchased a stand alone graphics card and a separate TV tuner w/ pvr capabilities.( i purchased this AIW being able to play the games on my PC, that i've been wanting to enjoy with great detail- not a hardcore here, just some flightsim softwares, *and* to be able to use my PC as a PVR system).

ATI AIW 9600 Driver Problems

I had a problem with my ATI AIW 9600 Driver after installing a MS Windows 2000 Driver Update. TV would not work and the ATI Driver would not install, neither from a complete re-install using the Catalyst disc, nor by using the latest ATI Driver download from their website. I finally got things back to normal by navigating the Catalyst disc to the Drivers folder and running the Setup file directly from there. That succeeded in putting the ATI driver in place. Now my TV works and the capture works as well. It seems as though having the MS driver installed would stop normal installs from replacing the Driver with any ATI version.

I have a 9800 pro AIW and i'm not getting this problem. With enough troubleshooting over the internet you should be able to solve your own problem. Have you tried to install the WDM drivers seperately?

I have a 9600 AIW and I am having the same problem. I have had the computer for about 1.5 years. Several months ago the TV Tuner wouldn't work. I kept getting the error message that the caputre driver was not installed. I would reintall it and a few days later same problem.

When I first turn on my computer Windows XP boot and it check for both monitors. When it check for Monitor one I get a little dot at the top of the monitor. Many times, if I shut the computer down and restart it loads up normally. Other times, I have to reboot several times get to get to the login screen.

Why all of a sudden everyone is having problems? I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 with all the required updates.

Thanks

John

Incompatible with XP SP2?

I think I have an answer for the Windows XP users of the AIW 9600XT: I believe the card is incompatible with XP service pack 2. I hate to say it, but I think the only way to get the card to work is to reinstall XP, update to SP1, avoid SP2 and reinstall the card's drivers.

THANKS TO garbeesa

I had the same problem with the capture driver. I followed your procedure by navigating the Catalyst disc to the Drivers folder and running the set up file. Everything is fine now. Thanks for sharing your solution and helping me out! I was ready to re-install windows! Glad I thought twice.

I use the AIW 9600XT and I have SP2 and my TV MMC, WDM all is fine. Can you guys get the MMC working by using older drivers etc? if you can it's a driver issue and not the card. Remember chipset drivers are also related to this big old driver mess. Right now I have DHXP 6.4's 6.5 WDM'S and a 9.14 MMC. The MMC is directly related to the version of driver you have installed as ATI changed to a unified driver for the MMC, you can see this in the device manager called the ATI AT200 Unified AVstream Driver. It has been the source of alot of issue's. Because if you use one of the older MMC's 9.10 or below I think you need the older drivers. if you use a newer MMC -you'll know because the TVoD is on 100% of the time then you need the newer unified WDM's - I think this is where all the issue's might lie. Using incorrect MMC's with wrong driver version etc..Just a Thought.

These SP2 incompatibilty ideas will go nowhere.... theres very little difference for video cards and WDM stuff between SP1 and SP2. Infact, most new stuff REQUIRES SP2 so you're SOL there either way

I have an ATI 9600xt AIW. Everything was working fine (I don't remember what driver version i was using) until I tried to upgrade to the new Catalyst 6.5 and MMC9.14. I noticed it tried to install the T200 AVStream Driver (instead of all the WDM) but it did not install properly. So I removed all ATI products, even used DriverCleaner in Safe Mode, I tried to install it again and no luck still. I wiped everything several times and re-installed my OLD drivers from the original ATI CD. The display driver installs and works fine, the MMC 8.8 installs and works, but now the old WDM drivers won't even install! I have yellow exlamation marks next to the WDM Rage Theatre Audio, WDM Rage Theatre Video, WDM TV Audio Crossbar !
The ATI WDM TV Tuner driver looks like it installed ok, as did the WDM Specialized MVD and PCD codecs.

So no TV and no capturing for me. Any suggestions ??

I can't seem to install the old WDM drivers OR the new T200 Unified AVStream driver, so now I'm stuck!

ATI Support just keeps telling me to uninstall, reboot, and reinstall.

OK, you can download the WDM package well the new one from ATI and try and install that but you will have to be using the newest version of MMC. for AIW's it like:
Base Driver
WDM's
MMC
Now when you did the driver cleaner did you remove EVERYTHING ATI based, sometimes things get in the way of other things..like something running in the system tray preventing your from installing the new drivers correctly. That's what I would try..

I was excited to see they released a new driver, but no look with that either. I still can't install WDM. The Unified T200 AVStream Driver still has a yellow exclamation next to it and can not start.

I sent ATI support my XP System Log and an ATI System Log. They suggested that I try updating my motherboard bios and chipset (asus p4c800 E Deluxe). Which I just did. Still no luck.

ATI support also suggested that I go to command prompt, type MSCONFIG, go to STARTUP tab an Disable All startup items/services. I did this, re-installed the WDM, and still no luck.

I asked how many other people are having this problem and they don't respond. So I'm basically stuck and can't capture. There is no way I'm going to re-install XP just because of this.

when you did the cleaning did you remove the WDM's etc? remvoe everything again with driver cleaner and see if there is anything left over..like a file folder or reg entries etc. I am just thinking of what I would look for..You may be looking at a reinstall..BUT also try reinstall your chipset drivers again..sometimes they get corrupted and when they do..the rest of your drivers for display do not function properly..

I recently reported problems of my own after updating to the CAT 6.6 and MMC 9.14. What a nightmare!!!

Anyway, I'm capturing again with no trouble by using the CAT 5.xx and MMC 8.8.

When I figure I have two or three days for nothing else to do, I'll see about upgrading again.

BTW, the troubles are with my second computer using AIW 9600.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm going to give it another shot when I have some time. I will uninstall all ATI products, clean out everything again, use driver cleaner, check the registry etc. I will even try updating my chipset again (Intel 875p). I'll post a message on how things go in case it helps others as well.

just wanted to update this thread...

After tech support was unable to solve my problems, they gave me an RMA #.
I sent my card in and got a new (refurb?) one back a couple days later. (AIW 9600 XT)
I am going to wipe everything using drivercleaner and try reinstalling this new card.
I'll let you know how it goes.

The new card that came back from RMA now seems to be working after I installed Cat6.2 display driver.

I'd like to try this....but as a newbie, can you explain what you mean by "navigating the Catalyst disk to the drivers folder"?

What that guy meant was put in the Catalyst installer CD that came with the card, browse to the folder on the CD with the drivers then run the setup manually (which to me seems pointless all the main CD installer does is call that installer)

Re: ATI AIW 9600 WDM Driver Won't Install/Register

I just registered...

I was here two years ago when I first had this exact same problem (worked fine for a few months, then crapped-out). I was able to fix it using the above procedure then, and I'd like to thank the guys here for that fix.

However, it happened again about a year ago, and THAT fix no longer works - my computer locks-up when I hit "retsart computer now". If I just exit out of the setup program and restart manually, nothing updates.

I tried every work-around I know for about two days and gave up (and swore-off ATI cards for all future computers I build). Unfortunately, I am not ready to build a new one, nor purchase a new vid-card, at this time, and I ran into a new problem.

I know that I can't get live-video feeds to work because of this problem (with my own webcam or those I can cannect to through various sites). No big deal... just like the TV apps, I learned to live withlout it. But now I have a new problem that I *think* is related to the WDM driver - I can't get my tablet to work anymore!

The last time I used it is when I had the ATI-WDM drivers (and TV) working properly, so now I'm thinking I need those drivers for a tablet as well.

Anyone here know if tablets use a related interface to webcams? Thats what I'm suspecting... anyway, if anyone knows any other trick to resolve this problem I'd love to hear it. The Driver downloads at ATI don't work at all for me (and never have, since I had the problem the first time), and now navigating to the driver on the ATI-CD no longer works as well (because it freezes on re-boot).

I will never buy another ATI product, thats for sure.

I've had no luck un-installing / cleaning out with Driver Cleaner Pro and trying to go back to what had always worked the drivers from the CD. It seems that somewhere the T200 WDM is still stuck in the system...

I am hoping that the TV Tuner functionality is still in tack and that when i finally get around to doing a clean installation of the system I will be able to get the AIW 9600XT back up and running. In looking over the posts from so many threads...one could almost believe though that whatever came in the updates after about Catalyst 6.5 ... permanently disabled the TV Tuner. I cant' quite believe that...yet and I'm still hopeing that a clean install will get things back. BTW I believe it all went wrong when i stupidly took Microsofts update recommendation. I've learned so much more since then.
