8500DV Problem

I've been using my 8500DV as just a video card for about a year as I could not get the other features to work. I decided to try to get everything to work, so I tried to uninstall all the ATI programs. Some would not uninstall, so I ran the ATI program that deletes all ATI files. It then used the default vga driver. I downloaded the proper software from ATI (v.6.11). After installation, I rebooted and the screen was black except for one white dot about 1 inch from the top and 1 inch from the left side, and one dot 1 inch down from the top in the center of the screen. Everthing else seemed to work as the various sounds I get when it boots were there. I tried the brightness control, and it just made the screen gray, but no image. I had to reboot and F8 to get to the SAFE mode. I then restored to a earlier copy of the registry. That brought everything back. I then bought driver cleaner, followed the instructions and tried another install. Same problem, so I restored again and tried the original disk that came with the board. It failed installing the driver saying "The parameter is incorrect". But it went on and installed all the other Wonder card programs. When I rebooted, It came on with the default vga driver. Any ideas where to start trying to get it to work? I have a Gigabyte board 81XHP with 1GIG of PC1066 Rambus memory and a 3.06 Pentium 4 chip with a 533 bus. I'm trying to avoid a reformat and reloading of everthing as I have 650 GIG in use on my drives.

Ouch,

I would try reseating the video card in its slot, then trying using the DriverCleaner program and the Original CD that came with the card again. The 'parameter incorrect' message is interesting, any more details on that particular message?

Driver installations are sensitive to having the latest chipset drivers for your mainboard installed first - have you updated them?

I had a hard time getting any information on your mainboard (81XHP), could it be a 81RHP instead - just double checking?

If you're worried about the data, stick the drive in another system and do some backups. You might need to purchase a 750GB drive to do it but at least then you'd have a backup anyway which is never bad
