Upgrade Primary driver only to keep SP WDM
Hello all,
did anyone ever try to only upgrade the primary display driver and keep the secondary display driver at version 6.2 or below, so you can keep the analog WDM drivers with newer Catalysts?
Thanks!

YOu can't upgrad a primary monitor driver and not the secondary one..for the most part I think the use the same driver. Now you can use whatever WDM version you want within reason. So install whatever graphics driver you want then install the WDM's after words. You can dowanlod WDM's only from the site also.. I hope I answered your question. IS there a specific reason you want to do this? alo of us do similar things especially when your trying to piec together a working AIW driver line-up....I guess that's what your doing..
Note: whan I Said within reason what I was talking about is they changed the WDM's awhile back. some version will work with some MMC's and some work with other MMC's this is what I am talking about. They integrated everything so if your trying to use WDM's that aren't integrated with a MMC that epects integrated drivers it won't work..and vice -versa... Hope that helps.
Possibly H3X, can eleaborate for you..I would say try it..just use driver cleaner in between..

Hello ROBSCIX,
and thanks for your answer!
The problem is this:
- first, you are right, I have an All-in-Wonder X800XT;
- so at the moment I am using Catalyst 5.10 with the analog WDM SP Drivers (6246) (except for the TV Tuner Driver, where I used the one on my CD (6290)) and MMC 9.03.
This is working perfectly, BUT... everywhere I read that it is impossible to keep the individual WDM Drivers (SP or NSP) with the latest Catalysts (6.3 and up), because they are insisting on that single so called "T200 Unified AVStream Driver"... And I would like to upgrade my Catalysts of course, but I do not want to use this Unified Driver, or even the NSP Drivers, because of all the associated disadvantages...
So my idea was, that since the secondary driver controls the VIVO features, to update only the primary driver, but you are saying this is not possible?... I thought it would be possible, because when uninstalling them you can choose to keep one or the other, although usually you uninstall them both of course. If this could be done, then you could simply keep the secondary at 6.2 or below and the primary, that controls the 3D functions, at the latest available!
Do you know any solutions to this problem:
how to keep the old individual WDM SP (or NSP for that matter) Drivers with the latest Catalysts (6.3 and up)?
Thanks again in advance!
Freddy

It may be possible, I would say try it out. What I meant is alot of use will use a Base driver and MMC from one version and use a WDM from another. what I am saying though is if you could get them to install the MMC looks for a certain type -so it' involved aswell. So say you install a MMC that expects to see a stream driver...it won't work if you have a older SP driver installed. I cannot say it's NOT possible becasue it may be. It will require testing and trial and error. So I guess you have your work cut out for you.
I think it may be possible. INstall whatever GRaphics driver you want-ONLY the driver. then install your WDM's then install your MMC -make sure the MMC is from a similar set..so if your using a older WDM use a older MMC..etc. Maybe H3X can post on this one. Most of us With AIW;s use mismatched drivers anyway as this is the only way we can get everything to work properly...good luck.

Just to clear this up, you're confusing the secondary display adapter with something that has anything to do with the VIVO/TV Tuner/FM functions. The secondary display adapter cannot be made to use a different driver simply because its the same thing as the primary display adapter. One is used for the DVI port and one is for the DB-15 port so they both control display adapters that plug into those ports.
What you want to do is change your WDM drivers that are used for the multimedia extensions of the card. You'll have to uninstall EVERYTHING to do with your ATI card, run Driver Cleaner and CAB Cleaner, in fact run as many cleaners as you can (don't go overboard with unnecessary things though lol...) then install whatever came on the CD (I think they're WDM_SP drivers, I can check mine again but I'm pretty sure on that). Then once the WDM_SP's are in, install the latest display drivers (by uninstalling the ones that came on the CD), and install the new ones using a custom install and uncheck the WDM drivers/multimedia drivers (just install display drivers and the CCC).
That oughta do it.

That oughta do it, BUT won't he need a MMC from around the same time as the WDM drivers came out. For instance the older MMC's did use the WDM SP's or NSP..etc but the newer MMC's use the AV200 Unified Stream driver and I don't think it will work if you don't keep this in mind. I alwys used the newest WDM drivers I could for my card BUT I had to keep the MMC that was compatible with that type of WDM. SO basically you have two MMC's one that will work with WDM'sp's and one that works with the Unified driver. That's how I remeber it anyway. I got my AIW video system working, backed it up 3 times and I don't touch it ever!...well not true but pretty much. Ati AIW cards will turn you into a driver wizard...lol...You can try and let us know.

Hello H3X4D3C1M4L and ROBSCIX,
and thanks again for your answers!
This is really confusing, because first the idea that the secondary driver controlled the PCI features (that is the Theater 200 and the Tuner) wasn't mine, but came from another authority in this field ( all-in-wonderer over at Rage3D)!?...
Then you are saying that you can keep the WDM SP Drivers when uninstalling the old Catalyst?... When I uninstall the Catalyst, it also removes the WDMs again, so how do you do that?
And then everywhere people are saying that it is not possible to let the new Catalysts (6.3 and up) work together with the old seperate WDMs (SP or NSP); have you tried this: does it really work, say Catalyst 6.9 together with WDM 6246 (belonging to Catalyst 5.2) and MMC 9.03?
And yes ROBSCIX, MMC is coupled to certain WDMs:
WDM: is best with MMC:
6246 (SP) . . . . . . 9.03
6300+ (NSP) . . . . 9.06.1/9.08
Unified T200 . . . . 9.13+
Thanks again in advance!

I've gotten it to work... kbuzzard was the first one to actually do this.
Maybe all-in-wonderer is confused? The way I've explained it is the way it works
You can get the WDM drivers seprately from ATI's site as a separate package download, if you know the Catalyst revision you want then you just go through the older package downloads and use whatever came with that revision.

Thanks again,
then I will try that!
Just one question though: you are saying "...if you know the Catalyst revision you want then you just go through the older package downloads and use whatever came with that revision."; I assume you meant "...if you know the Catalyst revision that came with the WDM drivers you want then...", because the Catalyst revision I want (6.9/6.10 and up) does not come with the WDM drivers anymore: just the Unified T200 Driver? Am I right about this assumption?...
Thanks again and I will let you know the result as soon as I have one!

Well pretty much....T200 stream drivers are still WDM drivers ATI just named their first WDM drivers the SPs then the NSP's now the T200, its still built on the WDM model (which sound cards use too) if I remember right

Ah... I see what you mean, yes! So from now on I will drop the WDM and call them just SP/NSP/T200 Drivers.
But this did not cause any confusion regarding what I am trying to do, did it: using the latest Catalyst Display Drivers (6.9/6.10) with the old analog SP Drivers (instead of the T200 Driver that comes with these new Display Drivers)?...

No, we understand exactly what your trying to do becasue alot of us do either the same thing or something very similar. This is just what you need to do sometimes to get the AIW's to work the way you want. Welcome to the club.
