Pissed Ati 9800 pro problem

Hello all,
2 days now i have a problem with my graphic card and no matter what i do cant fix it.

I installed the latest Catalyst 6,9 but everytime my pc starts after the windows boot screen shows just a black screen and does nothing.

Only way to log in to windows is restart and go safe mode or restart and go vga mode.
When i log in if i try to do anything like change resolution again black screen.
I installed the driver of 6.8 but the same.Tried even older drivers still the same.Clean installs but everytime the same. After bootup screen the next screen is just black screen .

my card is Ati 9800 pro 128MB and my system
windows xp sp2
P4 3ghz
ram 1024MB
asus P4C800E Deluxe

any suggestions?

Boot up in Safe Mode With Networking and go to ATI`s site and d\l either the previous set of drivers that was working on your pc or the stable ATI 6.5`s to your desktop and also the latest DriverCleaner Pro and install it so its icon is on your desktop.

Go to your control\panel add\remove programs and using the ATI Uninstall Utility uninstall the ATI drivers & CCC.

Power your PC down and unplug from the wall and re-seat ALL your plug-in boards on the MB. At this time you can also do a dust cleaning of everything.

Power up and re-boot into Safe Mode, cancel the hardware wizard, and run the Driver Cleaner Pro app. You can also run a third party registry cleaner at this time if you desire.

Re-boot into normal mode if you can, and if not power back down and re-boot into Safe Mode and install the ATI drivers you previously d\l to your desktop.

Re-boot once again and see if you can come up in normal mode.

If not your 9800 Pro has probably seen it`s days.

P.S. Also you did not state specifically whether your problems started AFTER you upgraded to the 6.9`s or your 9800 pro problems started with your old set of drivers.

Regards, Silverfox

I had the exact same problem, everything works fine until i log on to windows. i think it has something to do with ati power management switching off the monitor for some reason.

the solution was to create a new user account and copy over all my existing documents and user data.

give this a try and shout back if it works:

log on safe mode,
create new user account,
reboot and log into new account to make sure it works.

assuming all goes to plan the next part involves tinkering with safe mode and the administrator account to grant yourself access rights to your old account.

it was a bit of a pain to do but got an unusable pc back up and running without problem.
hope this helps.

Thumbs Up!

Silverfox thank you man!
I followed the steps you told me and installed catalyst 6.5 and it worked

only one problem if you can say it a problem. the cards drivers (in device manager) are Radeon 9800 Series. i changed them with Radeon 9800 Pro (of the catalyst 6.5) but then the problem came back.after boot up screen i have black scree,so i returned back to as 9800series. does that have any difference?
my card is Hercules 9800 Pro 128MB for sure

thanks again Silverfox, you are a life savor

If you think you fixed the problem, don`t worry about the device manager showing 9800 series.

Once you hopefully get the problem resolved again create a new System Restore Point just in case the problem re-occurs the next time you re-boot for any reason.

Also if you installed the CCC with the 6.5`s you can select the CCC not to start with windows during startup since it is a drag on the system during boot-up.

its gotten to the point were im scared to update my drivers in the hopes
for minor performance gains or bug fixs not to mention the whole CCC thing

I agree and can only say that everyone`s PC is as different as opinions in respect to hardware, software, applications, etc,. These newer drivers seem to be primarily geared toward the newer ATI cards utilized in more up to date pc rigs versus the older 800 series & earlier model AGP mb setup`s. Some folks have no problems and others have frictions !

I have some friends with older pc`s & ATI cards that have simply gone back to the 5.6`s and the old ATI control panel to eliminate their hair pulling & cursing !!!!!!!!
