X1600 Pro - "atidvag" Bluescreen Error

hello, i just recieved a really good computer last week which i bought , 2gb Ram/Memory, 3.2Ghz and an ATI X1600 Pro 512mb AGP, however ive had nothing but trouble so far with it.

ive had that blue fatal error screen 4 times yesterday (i.e. your computer is ********) and it told me there was a problem with the "atidvag", ive done some research and this seems to be common with ati problems, is there anyway to fix it as i realy really dont want to send it bk coz it would take this crap company over 1 month to sort it out and i need my computer , i think thats it overheats all the time coz i.e. when playing bf2 it has freezed a few times , sumtimes wen my comp is idle it even turns the screen off (not in good way) monitor shuts down, screen black but everything is still behind the black, ie.e if im on a game it has not frozen, i can play music or skip to next song using keyboard, just the screen goes black i mean it crashed/froze on FOOTBALL MANAGER thats not exactly a graphically demanding game.

any advice?

What we need from you is more information. What motherboard, CPU, RAM model/type, etc. What other devices are installed?

Once we get this information, we can start some troubleshooting.

right, the motherboard is i believe and AS rock one, ram is ddr i belive if thats what you mean, and i have a pci network adapter installed as im on a home network, since my last post i have again had this message on the blue screen of death, "ati2dvag" device driver stuck in infinite loop, i have now since removed the ati x1600 card and replaced with my old nvdia 5200fx and have had no problems as of yet.

OK....a couple of things:

1. We really do need more information about the particular motherboard. "ASRock" just doesn't give enough information as there are hundreds of models of boards. Particularly, does it have a VIA-Chipset? If so, plan on some problems trying to use an ATI card with that motherboard.

2. Changing from a nVidia video card to an ATI video card is no simple swap. In almost all cases, you need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows fresh. That's the easiest and fastest way to make this kind of upgrade. (I'm not kidding.)

3. Once you get a fresh installation of Windows, be sure to install the latest motherboard chipset drivers from ASrock. You'll have to know the model and version of the board to get the correct version unless the WEBsite is able to scan your system for the information.

NOTE: In all my previous experiences with VIA-based motherboards and ATI cards, I've had one big headache after another. I no longer even look at a board with a VIA-chipset. That's just my experience and I'm not trying to knock any manufacturer or chipset. But, if you do have a VIA-chipset board and can't get this problem worked out within a few days, I can almost guarantee you'll continue to have problems until you go to another nVidia card and/or switch to a non-VIA motherboard.

i dont understand what you mean with VIA sorry, i dont now everything yet, also this was a new computer which came with the ati card and i had no problems removing the agp ati card and replacing it witht he agp nvdia card also agp, i insatlled the driver once windows loaded up and i have had no problems so i see no reason why i should need to reformat the computer (again), since then the company i boght the computer from asked me to send the ati card back which i will do on monday as i know they dont work weekends. they claim its a pronlem with memory on the card itself but im not sure because they dont seem to know alot about anything.

Motherboards come with Drivers for the Motherboard itself. These drivers will often be based on Intel, SiS, VIA, ATI, etc. Your particular motherboard and/or manual, should have some model number and, somewhere near the CPU will be something with one of these insignias on it.

If you don't install the correct motherboard drivers after making major changes in hardware, you'll very, very and most often end up with big conflicts and problems.

If you started out with an nVidia card and switched to ATi, you should have reinstalled Windows AFTER removing the nVidia drivers and then installing the ATi card.

I realize you're very new to this, but, believe me, you're asking for all kinds of headaches when you switch between nVidia and ATi cards without reinstalling Windows.

This problem is compounded if the Chipset on your motherboard is VIA. So, if it is VIA, you're going to have less problems if you use nVidia as opposed to ATi.

And, since you're just getting your feet wet, don't be surprised if you find yourself up to your neck unexpectedly.

with this computer i started with the ati card, uninstalled the drivers, removed the card, put the nvida card in, installed the nvidia drivers, my computer would'nt work with the ati card properly. however since i ahve started using the nvidia card i have had no problems with it. i dont see why i would need to reformat the ocmputer just ninstakkeind a new graphics card? also i will check the manual when i get home because i am at college

The reason for reinstalling Windows is due to the fact that Windows has a Registry. In this Registry is kept the data relating to devices/drivers/programs, etc. that are/have been installed on the computer.

Having both nVidia and ATI data in the Registry makes for very possible conflicts. Whether these conflicts become serious or simply result in crippled performance depends on the system.

But, reinstalling Windows is very important.

I'm quite inclined to think that your mobo has a VIA-chipset. I'll be more surprised if it doesn't.

also i'm curious about your power supply...what manufacturer and what is the wattage rating? usually if a GPU overheats u will get some form of artifacts(stuff that don't look normal) especially when the ram is involved. shutdowns as u described often occur from lack of steady power. and seeing that ur FX5200 requires less power than ur x1600, that it would function. of course i could be mistaken in this case if u have a decent power supply

sorry i havent been able to reply quicker but my computer was just been in its '' i dont like plummy'' mode over the last few days, it seems that now i am using the fx5200 this has NOT solved the problems which i presumed it would, my computer crashes more frequent now, for example it took me 11 attempts to get on it on saturday, ive tried contacting the company i got it from and they sent me a memory test to burn to disc and try, it came back as if it was all working fine however this is not the case, i am going to contact them again to get them to take it bk and send me a new one. in the mean time, any advice?
