Please note that this driver does not contain all of the functionality provided by Intel Matrix Storage Manager; please read the documentation carefully to determine if it will meet your needs. Also note that this patch supports 2.4 kernels only at this time.

This driver does not provide the capability to set up RAID volumes, but requires that RAID volumes be previously set up using the Intel Matrix Storage Manager option ROM or Windows* driver. For users who do not dual-boot, Linux provides native RAID solutions such as dm and md that may provide the necessary functionality, as well as full administration within the Linux environment.

And what relevance does this have over other software RAID solutions in Linux? Do people (aside from slackware users) even use a 2.4 kernel anymore?

mdadm is what you want to be using as that configures 2.6 kernel software RAID options very well.
