DH Forum: Hotmail and Yahoo accounts banned from joining up
Due to the huge amount of spam we are getting from these two free email providers I have banned all yahoo and hotmail email accounts from registering on our forums.
This was a step I tried to avoid for as long as possible, however we are getting between 300-500 spam posts on our forum every week on Driver Heaven and it is taking huge staff resources to combat this problem.

No its set so current users are ok Jeff. I didn't want to have to do this, but the amount of spam posted on DH right now is tying up the moderators on tasks they shouldnt be doing. Hopefully this eases the load. Obviously this is going to affect some legitimate users so I apologise in advance for that, but trust me dealing with yahoo or hotmail support trying to report repeat IP offenders under multiple accounts is a waste of time. The support is a joke. therefore due to yahoo and hotmail support ive just did a site wide ban from anyone using their accounts.
Also as Pj says, if you theorectically change it then try and change back it wont work......

Really think this should be a sticky, since it's useful info for people that may want to join the site.

Very few people use gmail to spam the forum, so right now no.

Robert, Im not sure what you mean mate. by blocking hotmail and yahoo, im hoping more people will use their ISP email - therefore assuring we get legitmate users joining the forum rather than "iluvfones4045" who is selling 400 nokia phones for $5, thats the whole idea.

I know its not ideal judas, but really its the only alternative we have right now, and so far its working. obviously its not fool proof but its a start and certainly a deterant.

no no, not saying anything bad about the dicision, just mentioning my own case and that there are quite a few people that don't have emails provided by there ISPs.
I'm sure we all can find other places in which to signup and get through. I was actually expecting this to happen quite awhile ago because really, it's the most logical and easiest solution to try out.

Another potential side effect is...
I *thought* yahoo WAS an ISP as well.... and thus their ISP email may have the yahoo.com as well.... but I *could* be wrong on that (like yahoo ISP issued 'yahoomail' or something unique from the FREE email they have..?? like MSN and hotmail are segregated)
Thus Im thinking the repricussions to legit users may be more than you were thinking..??
Just pointing that out... sorry, no solution to a problem I am completely sympethetic to.

Im sure it will affect legitmate users, but after dealing with yahoo and hotmail support in reporting these issues I am past caring.
We have had spam users on many ISPS and when I show them reports. those users are always banned along with their IPS in joining up again. Hotmail and yahoo just automate messages and their support staff are idiots. Its a serious problem we are having. Since we have done this, spam and forum pollution has dropped almost 95 percent.
Any guests reading this who are affected, get an email account with a reputable free host, there are many out there. At least if you start abusing the forums I can get you removed from their side as well.

your account won't get trashed, it's only for users trying to sign up with accoutns from those sites
if you already have an account signed up with hotmail or yahoo, there won't be any issue

Have there been any problems with gmail accounts? Just curious as it may be an alternative for those needing a free email to sign up.

Gmail aren't currently banned, Anyone currently with a hotmail account is fine, we don't enforce strict email banning just new sign ups, I'm gonna close this thread as it's quite old now. Thanks
