Changing Led(s)

Staff member Joe "Roadee" Dawson has another guide up for our members.

Well, it is that time again, time for another installment in the Guides forum. This time we are trying something a bit on the Novice to Advanced level. But don’t get nervous or start having any doubts, only the tools that need to be used is what makes this achieve that level. I am going to show you how to change out a LED on an optical drive, and since this will require soldering the LED to the PCB, I feel that it is a bit more than a Beginner task, yet not out of reach at any rate. If you can do this mod, then you can have the pleasure of being a Novice computer modder, and have something pretty neat to show your friends.

they can be alot of fun....and a computer does have several of them.....plus they are small and easy to hide....yet allow you to have excellent lighting effects or even just accents.

I seem to recall a rather more "kludgy" approach somewhere, using TWO standard 3mm LEDS (angled together), to replace a bicolour. Would be tough/fiddly to get right, so that both show up through the diffuser, but the only way to break from RED/GREEN bicolour.

Another good LED-mod, is the optical mouse - if you can see the light from underneath, they can look REALLY COOL with something other than RED.

My case has some rather inadequate crescent shaped intake vents on the front (main vent is a gap in the bottom lip of the front) - I might try giving it an evil grin with LED's behind.

PS. One caution - high-brightness LEDS can be painful to look at, if you catch the beam centre .... not powerful enough do do the same damage as a laser, but even a short burst leaves after-images for some time.

I have see what you are talking about and have done it myself. It can be done......pretty tedious though I am hoping to hear from some people that have attempted this mod, or any mod using LED's for that matter

I dont believe in "stock" Although most of the mod's I do are on other peoples computers.

These guys seem reasonably priced, and that "full spectrum" RGB may have interesting uses in place of a bi/tricolour.

With all 3 primaries to play with, the old Green/Red/Orange indication could become:
Blue/Red/Purple ?
Green/Blue/Cyan ?

A reasonably good LED tutorial too

I'm in the UK, and if these guys are true to their "2$ shipping to anywhere on the planet", I might try some of their white for illumination experimenting - emergency lights etc.
Not tried them yet.

You can either change it........or put a black dot of paint on the end of it......that will take the beam out of the equation.

It indeed felt a bit weird seeing some of Joe's postings again, for a while I almost forgot that he isn't with us anymore...
