X1950 Crossfire backward compatibility
Am wondering if the X1950CF will be backward compatible with an X1900XT card... want to go conroe & crossfire - but would rather get the 1950 mastercard than the 1900 mastercard.
Anybody know?

i think it should be.. i don't see why not...
but you would always want to go with similare speced cards anyways... 1950xtx combined with a x1900 mastercard (ew)

i don't think it would work.Cause if that were to be the case.ATI could have allowed the x1900 master card to work with a x1800 slave card.
Don't get ur hopes up.And anyway this will be the last gen of cards requiring a master card anyway.

that doesn't work because X1900 and X1800 are different tech...
1900 has 48 pipelines and 1800 has 16 pipelines.
whereas the 1950 is identical to the 1900 but with faster memory.

It should work but I don't see why you would want to do that. When in CF mode, it downclocks to the slowest part so your new 1950 would all of a sudden be just another 1900 but with ddr4 in it... pretty pointless.

good point. All the hype of 2.0ghz gddr4 memeory would be pointless.
No performance benefit what so ever.(over a x1900crossfire rig that is)

i have a x1900 xt-x @ 650 MHz & 1550 memory, i want to install a x1950 mastercard @ 650 MHz & 2gb memory, the x1900 mastercard has slower clocks @ 625 MHz & 1450 memory. Is this possible to pair my x1900 with a x1950 mastercard ? thx

then again whats the point. The master card would loose the advantage of having the 2ghz gddr4 ram.U'd be better off getting an x1900 card ocing it to xtx speeds and then running crossfire.
As for u r question it should be possible. In DH's review the x1950 xtx is run in crossfire with a x1900 crossfire edition card.So it should work the other way round.

yes but it would be equal to the clocks of the x1900xt-x card with out any overclocking.i dont do overclocking. & you would still get the speed of the new gddr4 ram on the x1950 mastercard but only upto 1550 MHz that equal of pairing it with the x1900 xt-x slave card. This option is the best if you can do it.

IT does work, and it DOESN"T clock the X1950 lower. It would be SLi that does that. The only difference would be if the card was paired with a 256mb card, in which case the X1950 would only use 256mb of it's 512mb.

ok im gona purchase a x1950 mastercard & pair it with my x1900xt-x ATI rocks !!!!!!! just to be sure, this will give me better performance than 2 x1900 cards ? the dh review is confusing for me.......according to the charts(14,oblivion) in the dh review, crossfire x1900 xt is higher fps/performance than a crossfire x1950 set up(ERROR) ???? im puzzled ? surely the 1950 cf should out perform the 1900 cf ????
