Driver problem - Ti4400

Hey all

I know that I should know better by now, and if my system is working correctly I should leave it alone. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I installed the latest Nvidia drivers (84.21) recently, and my machine continually crashed.

Specs from Aida 32:

Computer
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
OS Service Pack Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180

Motherboard
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 1166 MHz (5.75 x 203)

Motherboard Chipset VIA VT8366A Apollo KT266A
System Memory 512 MB (DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Award Medallion (11/07/01)

Communication Port Communications Port (COM2)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

Display

3D Accelerator NVidia GeForce4 Ti 4400

Multimedia

Storage
Floppy Drive Floppy disk drive

Optical Drive LITE-ON CD-RW SOHR-5238S
Optical Drive OEM CD-ROM F566E

Partitions
C: (NTFS) 38162 MB (4868 MB free)
E: (FAT32) 24391 MB (970 MB free)

Note that the second HDD is an old one I put in the computer to get at some old data, and never got around to changing the file format.

Input
Keyboard Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
Mouse Microsoft USB Basic Optical Mouse (IntelliPoint)

Network
Primary IP Address 192.168.1.100
Primary MAC Address 00-50-BA-C7-4D-A0
Network Adapter Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (192.168.1.100)

Peripherals
USB Device USB Human Interface Device

After a bit of playing around I ended up going back several versions to the 81.95 Forceware drivers, as they were the latest that didn't crash my system on boot.

After this driver installed correctly, and thinking I had solved the problem, I pointed the Hardware Update Wizard at the .inf file, and now I get this error:

Cannot install this hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400
An error occurred during the installation of this device
The parameter is incorrect.

And when I look at Device Manager it says:

Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

and has the yellow exclamation mark indicating it isn't installed properly.

Prior to this the machine was running fine, but I don't recall what version of the Nvidia drivers I was running, and I of course uninstalled them correctly, firstly using Nvidia's Driver Installation Hints Document, and later even trying Driver Cleaner Pro with no change.

I am also looking for a driver for my monitor, which is a Dell Trinitron Ultrascan 1600HS Series D1626HT. I remember when I first bought it I found the driver on the web, but now am unable to locate it again.

Any ideas/suggestions on any of the above appreciated
