An ac3-passthru plugin? I am not sure what that would do for you with an analog speaker setup (or is that digital speakers?)
I do not think the fraunhofer MP3 codec should cause any problems. (BTW: That codec only works with certain MP3 files).
You can always reintialize the DSP, to set everything back to the defaults, and then setup Surrounder again for 5.1 sound.
