Faulty 6800 Thermometer?
Using the latest Omega drivers, my temp is reading at 115 C idle, which jumps to 140C+ when I try to play a game - this of course leads to the GPU shutting down. Is this a problem with the thermometer or can cards actually get this hot? If it is the thermometer is there anyway I can disable the GPU slowdown after a certain temp?
EDIT: 6800GT is the card.
Its also reading the ambient temp as 79 degrees which since I live in Britain I find unlikely!

I've never heard of a faulty "thermometer" on a graphic card. Maybe your HSF isn't properly installed, have you checked that the fan is spinning? And have you touched the card when running it? if so; is it hot to the touch?

I'm not sure what a HSF is I'm afraid.
Yes fan is spinning and yes the card is very hot to the touch.
EDIT: to add anothing thing - I took the card out and put it in the fridge to cool down for a few mins.
When I put it back in the machine the temp climbed rapidly to 80ish and stayed there, is that a normal idle temp?

Sounds like the card might be defective. I have had CPUs and 1 video card due that due to a fault in the actual chip.

I'm running 2 6800gt's and there temp's are 50 c when idle, and peak at about 65 c when under load, just to give you an idea of temps as i think my cards are running quite cool, which could mean there is a problem with your card, especially if it's hot to the touch under idle.
What make of card are you running ? I'm running leadtek and there stock heat sink kept my cards at about 70 c idle so i changed them for zalman coolers as i thought that was a little bit to hot.

That sounds like you're reading the temperatures in Farenheit... If those temps were in F, it would correspond to the normal temperatures in C.
However, those Omega drivers are old, and I think they may have had the infamous "temperature bug" that plagued all GeForce 6 users. Try a newer set and see if that helps. Be sure to use DriverCleaner Pro. |

he did say it was hot to touch. i would try removing the fan and apply some new paste, or maybe it wasn't on properly or even the previous paste is not working? I doubt the thermomenter is faulty, usually only give a off reading by a small margin.
From my experience, it's normal for 6800gt's to get around 85C under load.
