Correct me if I'm wrong...
Its a new video codec, otherwise known as MPEG-4 (part 10), that allows for further compression of video at higher resolutions. Meaning you get better video quality with less size. Can't really spout off the technical stuff, but thats about the jest I think.

I read an article about it recently, so I know what it is (a new MPEG-4 video codec), but I can't really tell if all the fuss that ATi, nVidia and a bunch of other companies are making is really justified.

its the new standart for everything video.. All TV, all internet video, all HD DVD stuff, even on mobile devices.
thats why hardware decoding is so important since it would be very cpu intensive.hardware decoding is a must for slow devices.
whoever does it cheapest and best will get loads of deals for PC, mobile devices, TV and DVD recorders and decoders/players etc.
lot of money to be made.

h.264 rules in terms of image quality and it is a new standard for the hi-bitrate and h-resolutions HDTV play and it is very important that the nVidia pure video filters support it as with HW decoding, since it is impossible to be decoded with CPU, when come to full HDTV stream and customer (not extreme overclockers) range of CPU's
PS. I love the image quality

I knew it was some kind of a codec, but I honestly don't know it's significance
you're gonna tell us though, right?

I have seen some of its use in proprietary VOIP phones with built in video, leading to a confusing but accurate acronym of Video Over Internet Protocol. This is were I believe that some of the most interesting and ground breaking facets will come from. Full (NTSC/PAL or SECAM) television broadcasts compressed to an amount smaller then their DIVX counterparts, while retaining almost all of their image quality. I have done some coding (mostly in Linux to keep it open source) and the protocol is amazing with its video conferencing ability and I do not believe that television both today's standard and Hi-Def can be far behind.

A protocol for encoding video digitally. Note that H.264 is not the content, but is used to encode the content for storage or transmission and is very flexible.

A new video codec, some of my recent video downloads are in that format... man did that took me a while to figure out.
Personally I still perfer the old & trusty Divx & Xvid format over this new one. Much less CPU usage and I personally can't tell that much of a difference in quality between a good quality Divxs/Xvids with a good quality H.264.
Also H.264 doesn't play on my chinese DVD player , but Divx & Xvids does

Mpeg LA? I think.
H.264 is now mandatory for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray specifications so was it them who invented it?

Yup, it's a next generation video compression standard. Basically, it's much more efficient at compressing video, but it makes it more difficult to encode/decode. That's where ATI comes in with our hardware accelerated decode

Hello AVIVO Guru! Would you mind answering a few questions I have about ATi's AVC acceleration on X1000 parts? *quickly & quietly shackles his leg to a column, locks the door, then turns the hot lamps on*
First off, if the acceleration is shader based why don't we see a larger performance gain when going from a single quad part like the X1300 to a X1900 which of course has a much, much more shader power? Is the AVIVO team working to improve the performance of ATi's AVC acceleration even further? Also, will you be working with other codec developers such as corecodec to make the acceleration available through their AVC decoders?
For others reading AVC = h264 although it's a slightly broader term.
