amd64 CPU hsf question

Hi, Ive got a amd64 3500+ venice cpu with the stock hsf. Im thinking about buying another hsf, one that is less noisy. When i take the stock hsf off, there seems to be some residue left from the thermal paste that comes on the stock hsf. Do i need to remove this and if so how before putting a new hsf on with new paste?

thanks

yes you will need to remove the thermal paste that is on on the cpu and prep it for application of some new thermal paste.
there are a few ways...
cheap:
use rubbing alcohol (higher % of alcohol the better) and q-tips or a lint free cloth (coffee filters work great) to clean off all the thermal material.

best:
use arcticlean. it is a 2-step process. one cleans off the thermal material and the other preps for new application. again, you can use q-tips or coffee filters.

I use arcticlean and coffee filters... I find it works the best.

now, for some new thermal material get arctic silver 5. it's the best.

for a new cooler, the best air cooler (and also one of the quietest) is the thermaltake big typhoon. just make sure your case is wide enough as it is a tall cooler
