Well to be honest that CPU is a sucker for gaming... It's very very slow and since many games aren't dual core optimized, that might explain the on paar 3Dmark scores and bad gaming scores...

Far Cry is really CPU dependant and not dual-core optimized, and your cpu has a relatively low clock. Still I wouldnt think that it should make playing uncomfortable. If it's playable at 1024*768, it should be OK on higher resolutions as well.

what avg fps do you get on farcry
i get avg of 59.62fps (according to a farcry benchmarking tool, all settings maxed out with aa 2x and af 16x) and i have a athlon64 3400+ @ 2.2ghz (i think) and a radeon x800gt 256mb (pci-e)
Your pc should in theory be better as you have a 1800xt (which is far superior to my x800gt) but i do aggree your cpu could do with changing.
I always used P4 but the moment i've changed to athlon and the performance is sooo much better i wouldn't change back to P4 even if you paid me to.

Welcome to DH. Your bottleneck is the cpu, so run 1280x1024 in every game with 6xAA/16xAF, my frames go UP when i do that, compaired to 4xAA.

The more you place the load on the video card the less the CPU becomes a bottleneck

Did overclocking your CPU help a bit? The guys are right, I would definitly see this as bottlenecking.

Yes, but you should be just fine running most all games with 6xAA/16xHQAF 1280/1600 (Fear i wouldnt go 1600 ) 2.8GHz is alittle low, get a scythe 1000 cooler and oc that thing :

HA yeah that i875 sure was a poopy one, as was the i850e before it. Especially when you compare it to the quality VIA setups of the time!

This is from the DHzer0point 6.2 release thread, but I thought this may apply to you:

AT first i noticed the difference when in the map Nuke for Counter-Strike Source. I noticed that the FPS was constantly shuffling between red, yellow, and green in the underground bomb site by the water @ 1280 x 1024 4XAA, and 8XAF. So this made me skeptical at first and made me uninstall the drivers because i knew i had better full out 120 FPS in that area with the CCC 6.2s. But then after a fresh install and a trip too the same spot i noticed the FPS was at low 40s and 30s which didn't make sense, cause i knew i had high 120s and stuff their with the same drivers. So i then went into the CCC and turned on Geometry Instancing Which immediately made my FPS go back too 120 as usual in that spot. So looking at the numbers, you see that with the 6.2 CCC i had low 40s and 30s with Geometry Instancing off, and with the DHZer0point i had shuffling 50s, 60s, and so on( It was never fully red like the CCC 6.2s) So obviously with Geometry Instancing ON with the DHzer0points you will get a slight increase in FPS and amazing quality at the same time. So thank you so much guys, my testing is complete for source, and im sure from the looks of playing battlefield2 and F.E.A.R the same applys too these games too. Keep up the great work these are truely a great set, that i will be using for weeks too come untill the next release.
|
So maybe you can try turning Geometry Instancing on? In CCC, you can enable this by going to 3D -> API Specific and check "Enable Geometry Instancing"
Hope this helps,
-fobis

Try playing at 1280x1024 with no AA or AF as a start, and increase the settings in steps. BTW, BF2 is a notorious memory hog (likes 2gigs installed ram!). I would set my Windows pagefile at 2gigs minimum and maximum, and defrag the drive...
What version of the Catalyst drivers are you using?
