new gfx card in Asus P5RD1-V from integrated

Hey, I'm hoping that someone has this board and can help.

I built my bro a rig this summer using this board. It's not anything special, but for a 12 yr old it's a great rig.
spec:
P5RD1-V mobo
Celeron D 330J cpu
512mb Corsair Value select
Lite on DVD drive
Sony floppy
Aspire X-Dreamer II case (w/ included psu)

So anyway, I got him this mobo because it has the ATI express 200 chipset so he would have x300 based graphics. and it has pcie so he could upgrade when he got some more cash.

When I upgraded to my 7800GT I sold him one of my MSI 6600GT's.

So now he wants to turn off the integrated graphics and install the 6600GT.
the problem is, he is not very computer literate (neither are my parents) and I'm at College half way accross the country and can't help him install it.
furthermore, my family recently moved and my bro misplaced his mobo manual in the move so he can't read up how to intall the card himself.

I gave him directions, but not being overly familar w/ the bios myself I can't remember exactly what he has to do in the bios for the switch to work.

So, does anyone have this board, or a very similar one that could tell me step by step what has to be changed in the bios that I can tell a 12yr old?

Go to Advanced-Northbridge Configuration- Graphics boot priority to set which is primary.
I'm not sure about this board, but it may automatically detect the card.
I don't see a way to disable the on board video.
Get the manual here (pdf format)

I believe you don't need to change anything; merely stick the card in the slot, screw it down and put the VGA cable on it. The motherboard will always set the PCI-E video card as primary, if the BIOS is not adjusted to do otherwise.

hmm... well I was thinking there was something in the bios that told the onboard video how much system ram it could use and I couldn't remember where in the bios that would be and figured something there would have to be changed... but if that's all taht needs to be done that'll be easeir to describe over the phone.

so just install driver cleaner, uninstall ati drivers, boot into safe mode, run driver cleaner, restart, go into bios change to look for pcie gfx first, safe and exit. turn off rig, put in 6600Gt, boot up, install new drivers and that's it?

hey, I just walked my brother though installing his video card... w/ the end of the semester we've both been pretty busy...

so we made sure that PEG/IGD was selected in Advanced/chipset/northbridge/boots graphic adaptor priority

That should be the setting to search for PCIe16 gfx card first.

so he put the card in and turned on his computer and his monitor flashed orange. He reseated the card, this time my dad helped and it did the same thing. So they plugged the monitor into the integrated output and it did the same. at this point my bro had to go do some homework so that's as far as we got.

does anyone have any ideas what would cause his monitor to flash orange? something definately does not seem right.

alright, well I have an update.

when the computer is turned on it does not beep or give a post code. the monitor flashes orange.

when my brother took the card out and tried the computer with the monitor plugged into the integraphics adaptor the computer posts and gives an error message about a failed OC.

Then we tried the new gfx card and it did the same thing. flashing orange screen.

does anyone have any ideas?

PSU perhaps?

No clue....failed OC sounds like a weird error

Edit: Failed OC for the CPU could just be an incorrectly set multiplier on the CPU, I get that when the CPU checksum doesn't match whats set in BIOS

well his case came with a 420w psu. he only has 2 80mm fans in his case, one dvd drive and a floppy. his case has a few led's but they don't take much power.

it seems like his psu should be able to support his system.

http://aspireusa.net/product.php?pid=86

although, I did just look and 18a on the 12v rail is a little low, but for his system should be fine. gah! I hope it isn't a psu problem bc I just sold my spare psu yesterday!!!

and failed oc... well everything in the bios for overclocking was set to auto. even after we loaded all the default settings the same thing happened.

Sounds like the mobo needs a BIOS update and a total CMOS clear

Yeah, I'd like to try that... the problem is that I'm in NY and my bro is in SD. furthermore, he doesn't have internet to get the updated bios. I could try to explain to him how to clear the CMOS... but it was hard enough trying to explain to him how to put he gfx card in... he's 12 and not very technologicly astute

How about your dad?

I'm sure its a simple case of unplug the PC completely from any power, move a jumper, wait 5 seconds, put it back kinda thing.

Besides the jumper is usually located next to the CMOS battery so that could serve as a landmark so to speak

well yeah, I did get them to do a little further diagnosis. When the 6600GT was installed and they hooked the monitor up to the mobo (integrated graphics) then the screen still flashed orange. however, when they took the gfx card out and had the monitor plugged into the mobo the compute posted and gave an error message about a failed overclock... the overclock thing makes me wonder.

I had my dad take the gfx card out of my parents computer... they have an ATI x300 SE pcie. they put it in my bro's computer and his computer posted. This to me says it's a problem with the MSI 6600GT. the problem is that I know the card worked just fine because I used it in my rig for several months.

I asked my dad to put the 6600GT in his computer, turn it on just to see if it would post... and then turn it off right away before it even tried to load windows... you know just to see w/o getting my parents to uninstall and reinstall drivers or anything like that. My dad didn't want to do that.

My best guess is that my bro didn't ground himself before he picked up the gfx card and somehow some static electricy fried the card. This seems reasonable as I know for a fact the card worked and my mom said that their house was extremely dry and there was lots of static electricity all over. I guess I'm going to have to see if I can RMA the card.

I think what my parents are going to do is just ship my brother's computer to me. It means that I have to worry about everything, but I'm going to make my bro pay to ship the card to MSI and to ship his computer back to him. But it will allow me to reset the CMOS and update the bios. I'll also be able to install new chipset drivers and anything else that needs to be updated.

the problem with internet is that my parents just moved a few months ago and they have 3 cell phones for 4 people so they don't want to get a land line... which makes sense. But they don't have cable and can't get it where they are located and so the internet options are either dial up or possibly satelite but satelite is really expensive. I guess my dad checked into wireless. My parents are running a camp... and the camp has dial up in the office so they have email and can use it up there, but it's a pain to download something on the camp computer, burn it to a disc then transfer it to one of their computers... plus since their computers (they have 3 or 4) are online and don't have updated virus protection it brings into question viruses and all that stuff.

I would like to thank everyone for helping me thus far. If anyone has any specific suggestions about things I should look into when I get the computer... probably sometime next week... I'm open to them.

Also, if anyone has ever RMA'd anything to MSI or has any suggestions or ideas about that I'm willing to hear them.

no, I don't think they can get cable... see they direct a camp so they live on the camp... and it's outside of city limits. Also, apparently it's too hilly and forested for wireless to work.

The failed overclock message is probably generated because the system wouldn't boot with the 6600. I've sent back a couple of vid cards to MSI....they're pretty decent about RMA's.

Ok, so I got my brother's computer today... pretty impressive Rapid City SD to Houghton NY sent via USPS in 2 days! so anywho, I get his computer and he has a card fan that had broken in shipping and was bouncing all over the place inside his computer and there was a dent in the top of the case... My mom got insurance so she's seeing what she can do about it.

Alright, so now for the good stuff. I put the card in and nothing. the computer turns on and does nothing... no beeps, no codes just nothing. But at least there wasn't a flashing orange screen... my bro has an old CRT monitor so that might be why it flashed.

step 2, I take out my other MSI 6600GT from the closet (hadn't sold it yet) pop it in and the computer starts up. it gives me a failed oc message, I go into bios check it out and then boot up windows.

step 3 clear CMOS and update the bios... his was OLD!

step 4 try the first 6600GT in my bro's computer again... nothing

step 5. take my 7800Gt out of my rig and put the 6600GT in. turn it on, my computer posts just like it's supposed to. I turned it off right away before windows had a chance to get pissed at me for changing cards.

step 6 become utterly frustrated and confused.

alright, so that's it... I have no idea what's wrong w/ the card. obivously the card works because it works in my computer and obivously my bro's mobo is alright because my parents x300SE and my other 6600GT work in it.

the only difference between the cards is that one is a ver. 2.00 and the other is ver. 2.01. the 2.01 works in his rig and the 2.00 doesn't

does anyone have any ideas? is this somthing that I should RMA either the mobo or the gfx card? anyone? I'm open to suggestions at this point.

I'd send it back. You've done enough to isolate the video card as the problem.

But what confuses me is that when I put the card in my rig my computer posts! there is a video signal.

Alright, so when I turned on my bro's computer this monring (I only have one monitor and keyboard mouse... so I have to use either my rig or my bro's) it gave me the same failed OC message. And this is with the other 6600GT that works! At this point I'm thinking maybe mobo or psu because the computer froze on me a couple times when first getting into windows. Any ideas?

Well, I've got another update. I think it's fairly safe to rule out a power issue. I plugged my psu (yes a Seasonic S12-600) to my bro's computer and tried both gfx cards. the one that wouldn't work before still wouldn't work.

So, we're left with an issue w/ either the card or the mobo or both.

oh, also I can't plug a mouse into the PS2 port on the back... it will only work via USB. seems like that would be a mobo issue right?

Maybe it got electrically shorted in the process of plugging and unplugging..... I saw a PS2 port die from that.
