Epson Printer
So I bought my wife a beautiful printer with a flatbed scanner and a card reader included in the design. Its an Epson CX4800, and what a wonderful paperweight it makes.
Here's the issue. I actually read the instructions before I installed or plugged in anything (first time for everything, I guess). Her machine is made up of:
Win2000 SP4
Gigabyte motherboard with Via chipset (no clue model number but can find it)
AMD 2000+ XP
512 megs PC 2100 RAM
80Gb Maxtor HD
generic 300w PSU (came with case)
GeForce2 MX400 vid card (not a gamer)
Add-on USB 2.0 card
I put the add-on card in when I realized that her printer was a USB 2.0 and had zero troubles installing it. All drivers were included with Windows, and it went in with no difficulties.
I installed the software, and when the software told me to plug in the USB cable (also a 2.0 cable if that really makes a difference), I plugged it in. Windows identified a new device being connected- something like an Epson MFP Composite Device and searched for the drivers.
The machine said it found the driver and installed them. THen it popped up and said that there was an unknown error during the installation and the drivers weren't successfully installed. The error message said that there was no task or function (not sure, its early) assigned with the device.
When I go into device manager it shows a USB2.0 MFP with a big fat exclamation point next to it. Properties of the device show code 28, no driver. When I try to reinstall or update the driver I get the same issue.
I have uninstalled the drivers and run all updates on the machine, latest chipset drivers, latest Windows updates all to no avail. I have run through the process not less than 3 times trying to get it to install properly.
I have an e-mail in to Epson about this, but thought that in the meantime I would post it here. Any ideas, folks?

Try unplugging it completely, installing software, then plugging it back in.
Odd though, my Epson printer works just fine.

unplug the USB cable from the computer and uninstall the printer softwares, reboot and then reinstall it.
also, besure to close all other applications and screen savers before reinstalling the software.
if the drivers that comes with the printer is older than the following versions, then visit this Epson site and download these two driver packages ...

Ahhh I did all as above already EXCEPT the TWAIN driver. I'll give it a try.
Problem is (I think) that the proggie asks you to plug in the USB cable then doesn't detect it. Thanks for the input.

before reinstalling the softwares, you still need to remove the installed printer drivers and reboot the PC first. this to make sure that all of the related registry will be properly updated. hope it'll work this time after the TWAIN driver has been installed.
the printer unit looks good and it has a Windows XP x64 drivers too, very nice.

OK got it figured. I did have to install the TWAIN driver, but not to get the printer to work. Just in case someone else has the same issue, here is what I had to do.
1) Go into Device Manager and find the USB2.0 MFP device.
2) Right Click on it, choose Properties
3) Go to the driver tab and choose to update driver
4) Have it show a list of drivers for me to pick.
5) Choose the "USB Composite Device" driver (would you believe that you aren't supposed to pick the USB2.0 MFP Device?)
6) Click next. At this point it installed the proper driver and popped up with a bunch of new devices. These included the USB Printer support, USB mass sotrage device, USB Scanner, etc etc.
7) Reboot
8) Print
9) Drink beer

BEERNOW!!
BEERNOW!!
BEERNOW!!
