Big Grin gettin my feet wet

Have just installed ati x850pro 256mb card on an Abit nf7s mobo. amd mobile 1800, flashed to 2380, 480w pwr supply, and 2 256mb corsair gold sticks. 100gb wd hd. and onboard invidea sound. ran aqua mark score of 57,500 out of the box, with no over clock at all on the 5.9 omega 2.6.71 drivers. i play alot of America's Army, and starting BF2, and am gettin spanked. Although I'm old, and burnt, I'd luv some info on turnin on this sys and card to help stop the blood flow. Appreciate any and all help.

Hi, surehand! Welcome to DH!

You've got a very nice system there. However, if I read that right, you have only 512 TOTAL system RAM. From everything I've read about BF2, you really need 2 GB to shine. Some people with 1 GB are complaining.

Also, you might just tinker around with your AGP Aperture setting to see if you can find the 'sweet spot' for your system. Believe it or not, some fare better with lower AGP Aperture than others. With your 512, I wouldn't go over 128 MB for that setting. 64 might even work better. Just play with it and see what works best.

sex pistol
i dont know if the mouse is a problem, its the new logitek gamers mouse, and that has helped alot. thx for the suggestion.
dyre,
you read right. 512mb ram. i forgot to list the fsb speed at 432, and im gonna have to read up on the agp aperature settings. there was no info on that in the owners manual, and the reason im here with questions is that from what i have read, i should be able to pump out at least 60k on aqua mark, (with a little tweaking), and to use all the graphics options the card has to offer. Being a bit old, i do understand that more is not always better, which is why im still sittin on 512mb ram. i went for quality, and speed with this card. and if i need to add some more ram, i may have to find a new wife. wonder which will be cheaper?....... thx again gents..

surehand,

I'm not too sure how old 'old' is to you, but, I'm a grandfather six times over as of last Wednesday. So, I've got a few miles on me, too.

For the longest time, with Windows 98/SE, I stayed with 768 MB of RAM because of problems if I tried to exceed that. Now, with XP and XP Pro, the OS really makes good use of the additional RAM. As you can see, I have 1 GB of DDR 3200 in my current system. I've been watching the ADs for an additional 1 GB of the same RAM and should be able to get some fairly soon.

I'd say that, if you can afford it, at least go to the 1 GB amount for now and see if it makes as much of a difference as it should. I'm using Corsair, too, but not the most expensive.

I haven't tried the Aquamark bench in ages. Maybe I'll do so to get a good comparison.

Good luck to you!

EDIT: I just downloaded the latest Aquamark 3 and ran the initial test. Score, without any tweaking: 62,242. This is the system in my sig.

Dire,
congrats on the new addition, with a head count of 10 grandkids, i understand the fun your having. Yup, im running winxp pro, sp2. so adding the memory isnt a problem. What i've been told, this sys, with the amd mobile 1800, flashed to 2380, runs better with 512mb. If that info is not correct, i am heading to the store this morning to order the other memory, and i'll stick with the corsair gold. once they arrive i will be putting the current set on the market.
