Issues with ATI drivers and 2.6.x kernels

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me with my driver issues.

I have never succeded in getting 3D to work, always hangs my machine !!!
The latest drivers kind of work, except that starting up Xorg 6.8.2 (init 4, to a KDE login) makes my system hang. telnet from another machine I always see the X process taking all available CPU cycles.

IMHO the drivers have gotten worse since I started - about 3 versions ago.
Back then I was often able to run fglrx_gears, both 2D & 3D, but never a 3D game :-(
My results are like this : Kernel ATI driver Result
2.6.10 8.14.13 OK, but 3D hangs my machine
2.6.10 8.20.16 Login freezes display, locks keyboard
2.6.13 8.14.13 Installation fails
2.6.13 8.20.16 Login freezes display, locks keyboard

I have some files with dmesg and Xorg output, but they are rather long so I have placed then on http://hojme.homeip.net/xorg-ati. The name/content of the files are :

ATI-panel.jpg screen dump of the ati-panel
xorg.conf my xorg configuration
dmesg-2.6.13-8.16.20 fglrx dmesg after init 4 om kernel 2.6.13 ATI 8.16.20
dmesg-2.6.10-8.14.13 fglrx dmesg after init 4 om kernel 2.6.10 ATI 8.14.13
dmesg-2.6.10-8.16.20 fglrx dmesg after init 4 om kernel 2.6.10 ATI 8.16.20
Xorg.0.log-2.6.13-8.16.20 xorg for kernel 2.6.13 ATI 8.16.20
Xorg.0.log-2.6.10-8.14.13 xorg for kernel 2.6.10 ATI 8.14.13
Xorg.0.log-2.6.10-8.16.20 xorg for kernel 2.6.10 ATI 8.16.20

The dmesg files contain three parts - first the fglrx messages, then a ps of the X/KDE processes and lastly output from lsmod.

My machine configuration is Slackware 10.2 on a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo, AMD 3200+ processor, 1 GB RAM and a RADEON 9100 based graphics card

TIA, best regards

Ib

Are there supposed to be hyperlinks in your message? I don't understand.

When you say a 9100 based graphics card, do you mean an AGP add-in board? You must, because A7N8X is an nForce mobo, NOT RADEON 9100 IGP.

Regardless, the 8.16 driver should work fine. Please provide the following:
  • Make/Model of your graphics card ("9100 based" doesn't help much)
  • dmesg log
  • X log
Just one set of logs log will do (i.e. one kernel w/8.16 driver). We should concentrate on troubleshooting one OS at as time.

We'll see what we can do,
robert.
