Opera 8 - Why is it so highly rated?
The software can be located here: Opera 8. Just curious as to what makes this web browser any better than the rest, such as firefox. Interested to see some points of view from DH members.

Its a much better browser than either IE or Firefox. Its more standards compliant than either (proven http://webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html ), renders faster and once you get used to the way it works its hard to go back to either - I adore the mouse gestures. Its also one of the most secure browsers available for windows.

I like Opera, but always keep going back to Firefox. I never was a big fan of mouse gestures either.

Really? I find it hard to use a browser without them now. Firefox is actually my least favourite browser out of them all, I quite liked it a while ago but recent builds have been less than great IMO.

In my experience, once you move away from IE the rest is just personal preference. I don't like opera because I do like extensions and don't like ads if I don't feel like paying to use it. Some people swear by it tho. I like to call these people "operies" and pretend they live in a giant tree with the gnomes and magical pixies. Sometimes they speak to me and they tell me I'll never amount to anything and that the camaro in my driveway is never going to get a good paint job if I don't stop my drinking. Then the orderlies give me my meds and everything is alright again.

For me opera already renders faster than any other browser, even firefox with that tweak applied. The new default interface makes it a lot easier to get into the browser and get working without having to spend an hour tweaking it (unlike previous versions). Most options (outside maybe adblock) are already integrated into the browser without having to install extra extensions. Mouse gestures are great as always and I cannot live without them And last, I just love the presentation of the browser.

What is wrong with the lastest builds. I don't gestures for two specific reasons.
1. I never liked fighting games because I hate to have to remember combos.
2. If I were to get used to them I couldn't use the browser on every computer I use. For example the Natural MS keyboard, yes nice ergonomic feel but every computer I use doesn't have one of those keyboards.
As long as I have my back & forward buttons I'm happy. I also think the price is a little steep for a web browser.

i like both FF and opera,
however i find FF is better, mainly because
1) its free
2) It has the greatest extension support
3) NO ADS!!!
however opera does have some nifty things, like voice commands and new torrent manager (which sux0rs btw)
However i like that FF is open source, so i can tweak it to make it faster for my pc
HOWEVER
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVEN ON DRUGS, CONSIDER USING IE!!! EVEN V7 SUCKS!!!!
Its a mainstream app that most people use, so more hackers are going to make stuff specifically for ie, and M$ slow aproach to updating its protection values is too slow.
order of preference
1)Firefox
2)Opera (payed version)
3)Opera (add version)
4)safari
5)netscape
...
infinite)IE

simple it a "pay browser" VS everyone elses are "free" ones....
that what they do that how they make thier money so to survive
it has to be good. Especailly if you expect people to fork out money
for it in a market full of free browsers....
or use the free versin and deal with ads...

I think opera is the best out there. Used to be a FF fan, but i can't stand resent builds and problems I was having at high resolutions. I never liked tabs in browsers until I used opera, now I have trouble without them. I don't really know how to say it, but opera seems to be so... organized. The layout, access to the features, everything seems to jive well and you can customize it quite easily. It is heads and tails better than FF and IE. As far as the adds go, I don't notice them at all. Some day I will probably but the thing, but not right now. I don't use the mouse gestures, just so accustomed to the buttons i guess i never got into them.
Over all... the browsers seems to have less annoyances to it, period. Standards support is the best and the rendering speed is noticibly better then the others. Give it a shot if you haven't yet.

Well said, I totally agree. You pay for opera if you want the "full" experience, but its worth every penny IMO. Its also by far the most secure.
