music folder lagging comp

i have about 1050+ files viewing at once for my mp3 folder. the file names are long here and there but very ogranized. but my system struggles to keep up usually. it wasnt like this before. i have formatted, defragged etc. i mean its only maybe 50 files more than before and the windows folder is far more complex than this.

also browsing through them with the arrow keys absolutely freezes the system for 5-10 seconds if i go too fast. scrolling through pauses music or what im doing. my computer is tweaked well and loads of ram and proc power so whats the problemo?

Did you change the file system like FAT32 to NTFS.

It happened to me before. I mistakenly made a folder with 99000 files in it by using an option in a program incorrectly. It was taking more than a minute to display the names of the files if I made a change to the folder like erase one file. It was an NTFS partition. I don't know how many files it takes before starting to notice this slowdown.

Its the RIAA's new software scanning your music to make sure it was obtained legally. I'm sure of it. I was informed of this by a rose colored ant that heard it from the talking cat down the road.

What view are you using in that folder? If icon, tiles or thumbnail view it might take a noticeable time and might not keep up with fast scrolling. Try list or detailed view
Another suggestion would be to organise in a set of subfolders, each containing fewer files.

subfolders would help, im also using a detailed view right now since people do organize by album and stuff at times.

its also being shown in alphabetical groups. this lagging would occur if i had too much junk on my HDs. formatting would help. i have no large files on my secondary HD where my mp3s are at

I ave a huge "pictures" folder with a lot of pics I view in thumbnail view.

It takes a while for them to cache, and even happens right after I just opened the file. But my PC never pauses like you describe.

D:\1pictures
size- 1.46 GB (1,578,459,626 bytes)
size on disk- 1.47 GB (1,579,205,120 bytes)
2889 files, 81 folders.

I just noticed when I checked the folder properties that the "pictures" folder was read only. I made the folder, so it should not be.. I switched it back to read only unchecked and it seems to have made a big difference for the better.

Hmmm....... strange it keeps going back to read only- I have customized the icon for the folder, maybe that's why.

ps- I have indexing turned off and disabled.

this registry setting helps on the NTFS that had large number of directories (noticeable while working on such system).
it might help a little bit on Windows NT/2000/XP/Server2003 with NTFS that contains a small/mid-size directories.

NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

Have you tried disabling DEP? maybe no affect on that- but maybe worth a try- I noticed an improvement overall when I disabled it via registry hack.

What did you defragment with? In most cases your master file table is very fragmented. Go to www.raxco.com and download the trial of PerfectDisk and run a boot time defrag, this will defragment all the locked system files on your drive and place them near the middle of the drive. That will probably fix your music folder lag problem, i had the same problem trying to figure out why one of my friends comps was taking forever to delete stuff and view files in explorer. You can also try disabling your anti-virus's resident protector or auto protect or whatever its called. Best luck

im gonna give it a try overnight then, i always use windows defrag. to be honest it does nothing. it actually makes me feel more computer is more organized when it isnt lol
