Pissed games that have 'copy prot'.

i am really sick & tires of buying a game, taking it home & installing it, only to have it tell me that it does not like certain progs on my comp. if they are going to usae this form of copy protection it should say so on the box.
i purchased rome-tw a couple of weeks ago & just got around to installing it. downloaded the 1.2 patch. installed it & got kinda excited about playing. went to start the game... , well you guys know the story.
i have the cd, i have the keycode, what more do these bozos want? & i still think there is something vaguely illegal about it. isnt it anticompetetive to force you to get rid of legal software that you paid for to run theirs? &, as i mentioned above, not informing you of this limitation BEFORE you buy the friggin' game should be some sort of issue too. imo.
anyway, uninstalled RTW until i can figure out a way to play it. i know i can if i do not use the 1.2 patch, but from what i have read the game is more playable with the patch than without.

you definetly have a point. i would have to use a 'workaround' to do it. & from what i have read in various forums the game is fairly buggy without the game patch, so not sure how playable it would be.
that, & i am just pissed.
if l like a game i have no problem at all buying it, the stack of games i have on shelves is actually ridiculous .
i am just really tired of laying down my $$ for games & then having problems playing the game because of copy protection. while people who are not paying $$ are not having these(or as much) problems .
the thing is, these ridiculous schemes are not necesary or viable. there are games out there that do not use schemes that require you to unload progs, produce hardware problems, & generally create software probs. these companys are protecting their investment(as they have a right to) as well as the 'non-freindly to consumer' companies. without as much $$ spent on theses kind of issues.

try renaming the exe it looks for or installing the program after you patch (unless starting the program checks every time)

edit: totally different topic but I understand your frustration. Some PC games don't have an option to flip the mouse buttons in the game so it's unplayable by me because I use a left handed setup. I buy a game, install it, find out I'm screwed, and now there's nothing I can do to get my money back. The most recent one was the new freedom force. If anyone wants to buy it lemme know

think i wrote it wrong. it is not the 1.2 patch that causes the problem, the game checks every time regardless fo vers. it is just that there is no 'workaround' for 1.2.

You have 3 solutions to your problem...

One: Update your current emulation device/Cdburning software so that it is no longer black listed. // One and a half... Edit yer reg to unblock list the app...

Two: Like the person above stated... NoCd (working patchs for people getting screwed on a game they spent money on) are wonderfull. I belive it is perfectly legal in most places to use such things as long as you can prove you have the original sitting somewhere in yer house.

Three: Switch yer application to the new version of daemon tools when that comes out. The german hackers are at there best createing a IDE instead of SCSI interface to load any type of CD file onto the pc... This will be the day that the people that make them BS copy protections start looking for a new job. Most of the blacklisting or ways of detecting weather or not you are useing a backup relys on weather or not your drive is SCSI or IDE... Like in the case of starforce 3 and games like splinter cell 3... This game checks what kind of drive you are trying to run the game off... if it doesnt like THE DRIVE it sas... well... no.... we shouldnt run as this isnt a device that we particularly like...

The new daemon tools beats all known "and most unknown" copy protections. It will basicaly be like the pc seeing nothing but 0 and 1 (even though this is impossible as the drive's dont read every 0 and 1 and most copy protections burn bad sectors) but it will be great!

as far as i know there is not a no-cd for 1.2. at least i could not find one.
& substitute no-cd for workaround in my posts. was trying to be PC. guess there is not much point to it.
& i am still pissed that being a legit buyer of the game i have to resort ot these measures. what is the point of forking out $40-$50 a game if... well, 'nuff said.

WTF is a Super Game? Are those the ones that you just plug a jack directly into your skull and live the game?

A little non sense now and then.... Even by the wisest of men... If the 0's and the 1's just arent playing your song... all you have to do, is let them know that if they dont play nicely, you will bring in the big guns... Check yer msgs...

That's why I always check on the web to find out what C.P. a game has before I buy it. For example, Silent Hunter III. All set to buy it until I found out it had StarForce. Read too many stories about StarForce slowly down systems, causing crashes ... not going to go there.

On the other hand, even knowing the C.P., sometimes a game just doesn't like a system. Sigh.

Some games and applications dont like you having software installed that could be emulateing the disk for the software. Like lets look at Alcohol 120%. The application kicks butt and currently does a SCSI emulation of a cdrom drive to emulate a cd file as a actual cd. Some developers choose to have anti copy protection that sucks SO MUCH that it wont allow the game to run if that software is INSTALLED to the machine... they want you to UNINSTALL the software that you paid for to run the new software that you paid for. While I dont support software piracy, I am all for NO cd cracks as I do frequant lan parties alot and cd's do get stolen. Also, I just hate the idea of swaping disks out of the pc every 30min to change the game. Back in the day when they kept some files on the cd as it would take up to much room on the pc, there was a use for the cd in the drive. Now the only reason we have a cd in the drive it to proove that we are useing a legal copy...

BTW- A heads up for all you people who love the law of free use "Aka" (I paid for my software and legaly allowed to back it up) Daemon tools is releaseing a 1.0 version soon that will emulate a IDE cdrom instead of a SCSI. Alot of detection things work of knowing that a regular joe isnt going to have a scsi for a cdrom. With the IDE being under full control of daemon tools, it will be like reading a actual 0 and 1 off the disk. Starforce is going to have to work harder to piss us off soon

games would simply sell better if

1. they took more care in production
2. keep the price 30-40 usd
3. if you are going to charge 50-80usd, it better only be a premium pack

I've never installed StarForce ... heh, so I can't say. On the other hand I remember updating a version of Mechwarrior ... was it Black Knight? Can't remember exactly. And got the CDilla stuff on my HD without warning. With a patch! Ugh.
