Updating BIOS to support the CPU?
I'm looking at picking up an X2 for my next upgrade and from what I have read, any Socket 939 board should support it if it's updated to the latest BIOS version. But the problem is, how would I update the BIOS without a Processor in it? I'm moving from Intel to AMD and don't have another Processor I could use.
Stupid question, but I never really stopped to think about it..

Buying a new motherboard today should almost certainly get you one with a fresh enough BIOS to support the CPU. The newer type of board the better. Not all 939 boards work with the X2's as there are a few exceptions.

Hi daedel
I just had that experience this weekend. I built a new computer for a friend this weekend, using a Abit AN8 Ultra and a X2 4400+. The Bios that came with the AN8 allowed me to at post, after that I flashed the Bios to the latest which in the AN8's case would be the Bios 16. After that I went ahead and installed Windows XP Pro on my friends computer. Whatever mobo you decide to get just check around and see which Bios it ships with and then you can work from there. Hope this helps.

I'm just wondering, if it does have an older BIOS version, would the PC POST, allowing my to flash or would it even fail to start?

It depends on the mobo, you should check for the specific one you're using beforehand.
From the above post it, looks like Asus boards (or at least that one) will POST at least, and I know the DFI ones will as well. |

I've had nothing but great experiences using ASUS boards so I'd probably stick with that line.
