C:, D: and E:

when i set up my 250GB HDD,
I want partition C: to hold the windows swap file.
D: to hold only windows.
and E: to use for everything else. (program files, my documents etc..) And games.


My question is,.. :

how big should C: be? (for the Swap file.)
and how big should D: be? ( for windows.)


And E: will of corse be what ever's left over...



Any sergestions?

If the system has only one drive then you might as well have the swapfile on the same partition as the operating system. Ideally it should be located right nearby often used system files in such a case. Assigning a large, fixed value would ensure that it's not too small and doesn't fragment from growing/shrinking. Have say 20GB(c:) for system, swap and applications, and games+files on the rest(d:). Or make d: for games if you don't mind having them on a separate partition, and e: for files. But if you already have or plan on getting a second drive it might end up feeling cumbersome to have loads of partitions.

so u don't think there should be a seperate partition for the swap file?

20GB, seems a bit big. I didn't realy plan on installing anything bar windows on D:

A separate partition for a swap file is fine. I have one an leave it at around 1 gig. It's right after my windows partition which is about 5gig. Then games, music and movies are all on their own partitions. As for how big they all should be, that's all personal preference.

if you are using one hd there is no reason to have a partition for a swap file. & there are reasons not to.
install windows to your c partition(wich is were it has to go). as soon as you get win installed, along with sp2, go to sys prop & set your swap to one size-as stated above this is personal pref & mem dependent- then defrag. install the rest of your software & defrag again.
really though, xp does an excellent job of managing the swap file, especially on a single hd system. if you feel you have to do something set the min swap fiel size to 1gig & let xp manage the rest. this way you will always have at least 1gig of swap file available on the fastest part of your disc.
like i said above, there really is no improvement managing your swap file in a single hd sys over letting xp do it.

I'm useing win2K,.. also i'm cofused. In ME and 98SE there was just one swap file.
But in 2K, it apeares that it makes a swapfile on each partition???? I'm confused, why dose it do that?

Dose it mean if I set a swap size on one of the partitions, it will only be used for games/applications that are INSTALLED on that partition.?

Plz help, is there a 'Global' setting that I'm missing? It dosn't make much sence to me that win2K has swap file settings for more than one partition/drive.

It does not. One can optionally spread the swapfile over several drives, but it's not worth meddling with.
