Nero here too for data backup. Nero is great for manual backups of files, but what if you need to reformat? Remembering which folder has your email, remembering settings, manually copying favs, documents, files, what not, and then manually copying, importing, and retyping all that back can take hours, or longer if your not effiecient at it.

For me, Genie Backup is a great tool since I can save all email, addresses, documents, favs, settings, registry settings, and what not into 1 compressed file within minutes. Burn that to a CD/DVD, and I can just as easily reintegrate them into the newly installed OS. What would take me hours of sorting through files/settings can now be done in mere minutes, and in just a few clicks.

So, do you guys use anything else? What habits or steps do you guys have or take when backing up data? I know it's a bit off topic, but I was just wondering since it ties in with the type of device you use to backup things.

back?

hmm, call me crazy, but occasionally i make a DVD-R which i date and use for what i need to use it for (transfering files i need and whatnot and to store for archiving later)..

this is done.... my gaud, it varies, sometimes i've done it as often as 3 times in a month, and others, not for a full year.

however i have on my main computer, and my master server, a partition dedicated to storing everything, every fresh format and install, these files are updated and intergrated into as one partition on the master server, or the main rig depending on which i'm completely full fresh installing (full partition, HD wipes)

i have currently about a million projects on the go at once..... (i'm stupid)..... which including everything i wish to keep, is approxamitely 250gb worth of data currently.

Major projects that consume majority of the memory is my main being the recording, editing and recompiling of the entire Star Gate Series. (several gb as it's around 22 episodes per season at 8+ seaons). When it is mostly complete, these will be burnt (possibly) to disk and then given to my father. (bit of a long story)

second may just be my Quake 1 PrePack project, serveral thousand images, models, files in general, spanning as a archive of every build i've done. This at some point will be continued, at reborn into something many times better then last seen.

third may be the community ut2k4 pack. Still a work in progress, very slow going as apparently most authors don't seem to be responding, and trying to fix the problems with specific portions myself is a learning experience for myself.

Every project i teach myself how to use the tools. But i get plenty of support from various friends from around the world.

EcPercy will become famous soon enough

I have a FreeBSD server with some network shares (Samba) that I use to store data on. I don't see the need to use cd's or dvd's when the cost of large harddrives is so low.

You can't be too careful these days!

P.S. Here is the funny thing. . .I remember in 6th grade sneaking into the computer lab at Montana State, and playing ASCII based games on a terminal running BASIC. . .and we kept our games on thses rolls of punched tape. I actually still have some, as well as the HUGE scrolls of rolled up paper that would be generated playing Star Trek or Adventure ("Kill dragon". . ."With what, your bare hands?")

Too funny. And YES, I am old.

I use Symantec Ghost 7.5 and/or 8.0 for DOS (Symantec Ghost 7.5 for DOS fits on a start-up floppydisk)!

Perfect for drive/partition cloning anywhere and anytime!

I'm usin' Ghost for more than 10 years now!
Never had any complaints!

I mostly use a Maxtor 5000DV external drive via FireWire, although USB2 works fine too. It came with a utility called Retrospect, which seems to be pretty highly rated in the Mac world, does OK in Windows, too. I also burn a CD or two via Nero for really important stuff....

Well I backup on dvd, flash drive, cdrw, and on my kids comp. Weekly backups to the kids computer and monthly backups to media. I have made a mistake in the past while using just one type of backup so redundancy is the key.

Good luck finding one of those! I just picked up the Plextor 740a because I couldn't wait.

I mainly use my external 160gig Iomega USB 2 drive. However, will use dvd's for very large items that I don't access much.

For running files around that is the method I use now (Lexar 1Gig) - love it - no more cd-rw's with their pesky read compatability problems!
