Card recnmmendations
I am planning on setting up a video editing system. What video card is recommended? The videos will be maximum 5-6 hours long.
At the moment i have:
1.2 GHZ processor
512mb ram
15GB hard drive - planning on upgrading. ... Maybe a 200GB?

Don't bother with a 200 GB, get yourself a nice 300 GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 drive with a 16 MB cache....very good for that kind of work.
If I was you, and I didn't plan much on gaming, I'd just get a cheaper All In Wonder 9600 XT or something along the lines of that.
However I would add more ram and perhaps get a faster CPU if at all possible?
But if you do plan on gaming, an All In Wonder 9800 Pro or All In Wonder X800XT is just as good except better for gaming  |

Well i am in the web development area working with 3d studio max and other similar programs also.
So maybe yes a faster CPU and more RAM should be required. Would you think i be better off just purchasing a laptop for web dev. work, and leaving the PC for video editing purposes? From my experience video editing takes up alot of resources which includes hard drive space.

Yes your right, i don't play games. So maybe i would be saving money there then.

Yes, I would  Its very cheap, and its still good for gaming and includes temperature monitoring and FM tuner and all the goodies, so you don't loose out in any respect.
As for a laptop for web developing, the fact that the screen is so small would suck. Compared to a dual monitor setup, a laptop wouldn't do much for you save adding mobility |

You are right, thanks for the advice. But would you think that a video editing system should not be shared with gaming/web development etc...? Or do you think that the system should be ok for both web development and video editing? |

Well you get the benefit of having one all powerful machine thats good for doing both things fast. I use one machine for doing everything and I don't have a problem. More power is more power, regardless of what its used for

Yeah very true. Suppose i will need some back up sources also. Never know what could happen really especially with a computer connected to the internet.

Of course you should be running a firewall and anti virus and anti spyware tools, but that goes without saying . I wouldn't worry, as long as you take precaution it shouldn't be a problem |

If many is no object your far better off with something like a WD "Raptor" 74GB SATA,
If you need more space get a couple of 120GB drives and put them in a raid configeration
You should also look into getting 2GB of ram, AMD 3200+ or Intel 3.2 ghz or better would
be best... for your use
AS for video depending on what you doing you may want to get an decent
AIW "all in wonder" ATI card... |

I suggested the AiW card....
As for the rest of the machine as long as it works its ok. Raptor's also suck for video editing because they're so puny, and 120 GB's in RAID such because they're slower than Raptors..hehe sort of a conumdrum.
I suggest perhaps a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 with a 16 MB cache and 300 GB of space....get another one and use one as the In drive and one as the Out drive, and you've got enough HDD power *AND* space there.
The difference between a DiMax 10 and a Raptor is small, but the storage space delta is far bigger so the DiMax's are better suited to it |
