The performance of my new 6800 GT disappointed me....

I am disappointed from my new card 6800 GT (agp slot).I had an ATI 9800 PRO card and i decide to change with a nvidia. But the performance of 6800 in the games are poor .For example in Final Fantasy XI i have 18-25 fps!!and lags (with ati the performance was better). The same happen and with THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK(with all settings full) i have a little better performance from nvidia against ati but the cards power deference is huge and the fps deference was only about 5-7 fps.I made format and clean install windows Xp PROF SP2 the latest drivers in everything. but nothing happened.Whats going on?I dont think that 6800 gt is so weak.Any idea?My system is...

P4 2.6 HP @800
1 GB 3200
MB MSI 875P
VGA 6800 GT 256 MB (drivers forceware 71.84)
Soundcard audigy2

My benchmarks results in 3Dmarks is normal.

System Specs

http://firingsquad.com/hardware/chro...k_performance/
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...iddick_perf_2/

Take a look at those two, and see how close your performance is... Also, you may want to make sure you have all the chipset (AGP) drivers installed correctly.

And of course, welcome to the forums.

What is your FPS actually? Also, All MAXed with 6800GT is likely different than all MAXed with 9800 Pro, since Pro by default does not run a few very-high-level shaders, which 6800GT does in Riddick, so make sure you are doing apples-to-apples comparison there.

Thank you for your reply.Your links helped me.Us i read using shaders 2++ in Riddick for some reason kill the frames. So i tryed shaders 2.0 and the deference in performance was awesome. It works like a dream, very smooth.

Thank you again

Most games support various shader levels. Which games are you talking about here?

if your fps seem a bit low, i think its because you have a beast of a card, and a slow cpu... 2.6ghz intel isnt enough for a 6800GT. you should have atleast 3200+ for a 6800GT.

You hit it RIGHT ON THE HEAD Bro!It's the CPU thats pulling the GT down. The GT I had ran like a screaming ME-ME.Get youreself an ASUS A8V-Deluxe and and AMD 64 Winchester 3200{GREAT bang for the buck!}and roll on with the program. That GT will rock-n-roll then!

Couldn't agree more. The 6800 GT/Ultra cards almost require a fast CPU and Mobo setup or the poor 6800 GT/Ultra will fall asleep before the CPU is getting there.

lower the shader level in game from 2.0++ to 2.0. frame rates will increase dramatically.

Millions Knives is on a distinguished road

I've posted on here before about what I believe to be poor perfomance with my BFG 6800GT OC. I've tried to find benchmarks and tests that have been done with this card to see if I'm expecting too much from it. In games like Counter-Strike Source I find FPS drops from 75-80 to 30-40 when there are 6 people on screen and shooting. This makes it very hard to play, and I'm running the game on the default settings it comes set to.

I'm currently running the Zeropoint 76.44 drivers and also am using the autoexec.cfg that comes with it. No matter what drivers I've tried, I get the same results.

My Valve Stess Test results are: 101.98
My 3D Mark 2005 score is: 5036

The rest of my computer specs are in my sig. I was wondering if anyone else had this card to see what there performance in games like CS:S is.

???

hi guys cool site first of all, Im a little concerned over this thread. is nvidia cheating again? synthetic benchmarks are one thing, but real world gaming is a completely different discussion. i switched from a ATI 9800pro with the thought of UNREAL 3 engine coming soon. well in the meantime i play Americas Army, with my RADEON card i was able to play with 90-110 fps, after swtiching to the PNY 6800GT 256mb ddr3 (clocked 421/1112)my framerates dropped to 60-70 fps. whats going on here? will my card only benifit from technology not yet released? i spent quit a few hours checking various forums related to this issue and it seems to be more wide spread than i thought....i've also read some things about voltage tweeks i was jsut wondering if i could benifit from it?
if anyone could give any info on this situation it would be greatly appreciatedd...

Yeah i feel the same way. I still haven't been able to find any answers for the low FPS I get in games that I feel I shouldn't be. I wish I could find out from the majority of people that have this card if they are having similar FPS problems.

I, myself have softmodded my 6800GT with an Ultra bios and I have seen dramatic increases in performance, although this may not work for EVERYONE. Usually slowdown after overclocking is a sign that your card may not be able to handle it. You may want to try disabling fastwrites and sideband addressing in your bios. These do seem to limit many people's overclocks. If this doesn't help, try backing down your overclock and see if your performance goes back up. My card runs beautifully at 415/1190, and on average, a 6800GT can achieve 405-425MHz at the core with ease. A couple more things you might want to try are updating your drivers and using RivaTuner to overclock. I myself use RivaTuner 15.5 with the ForceWare 76.41 drivers and my framerates in games are very good, with no artifacting or lockups.

EDIT: Also, what kind of power supply are you using, and how many amps does the 12v rail run at? You want a power supply with 420+ watts(more is better) with a steady 12v rail that stays within 4% of 12 volts and an amperage of the mid-20's and up. I use a Rosewill RE502 500W PSU with a steady 12v rail that runs at 34 amps, so my 6800GT is getting all the juice it needs, with some in reserve.

Before you try an Ultra bios, you should try another 6800GT Bios, as a 6800GT runs faster than an Ultra at the same clock speeds due to faster memory. I was told this, so I re-flashed to another 6800GT Bios which overclocks just as well as the 6800U bios. The only thing I changed on the 6800GT bios with NiBiTor(Nvidia Bios Editor) was the voltage to the chip, from 1.3v to 1.4v. I got about a 300 point increase in 3DMark2005 by reverting to a 6800GT bios at the same clocks, and this is especially noticeable in games. If you would like, I could send you the bios I am using so you don't have to go through the trouble of editing it yourself. Just PM me your contact info and I will try and get back to you as soon as possible.
