KX drivers installation went wrong, what to do?
Hello there guys. I'm posting here because I'm going crazy and need a quick solution.
First my rig:
win98se
pentium 3 900 mhz
512 mb ram
sounb blaster live
Everything worked ok since I tried to install asio4all drivers which couldn't work because they didn't find any wdm drivers. I installed then the KX drivers but made the awfull mistake that I didn't uninstall the old sb drivers first. Now I have tons of conflicts and even winamp doesn't work. Being a beginner, can you tell me how to resume a normal KX playable situation?
In the meantime I uninstalled everything - KX and asio4all - but still no sound.
In the system - properties - hardware, I can see that as a multimedia device there is still the kx thing even if I uninstalled everything........I'm kind of lost at the moment.....
Hope to read from you soon

Thank you Chris for your very quick help. I'm downloading Drivercleaner pro from DriverHeaven site and will give it a try. Also, do you think that I will still need Asio4all drivers?
Thanks again

You donīt need any other asio drivers since kX supports low latency asio by itself. Try to install the 3537 version if youīre on 98SE, it runs quite stable. Donīt install the betas of 3538, they may cause problems with the old OS. You need to reboot your machine twice or more after installing kX, donīt let you fool by error messages. If nothing helps, try a manually installing of the drivers first (so that the system can detect your card).
Greetings!

Thanks Chris and Travelrec for your help. Is the manual installation hard to perform?
Shall I uninstall the card itself and let the pc detect it? I can then let the pc see the kx drivers.
Remember I'm a beginner and scared about manual installations....
Thanks again

Chris, Travelrec: no way I cannot have KX drivers to work, still no mixer, no anything. I tried the manual installation but with the same results. I would like you to check for some pics but I cannot upload them because they are claimed to be too large, just 14 kb. Anyway they refere to the same thing: after boot has finished, an error windows tells me an audio board inizialization audio error occur. Reinstall the drivers....if you didn't boot your pc then do so otherwise if installation is still on ignore message (hope I translated good from italian).
This is the only thing I can say so far. Any clue on the solution?
Thanks
Michael, Italy

there are 2 kx.sys in the 3537 folder, one is kx.sys and the other is kx98.sys. i think you got the wrong file in your systemfolder. delete the kx.sys in the windows/system32 folder, copy the kx98.sys in this folder and rename it to kx.sys, i think this will help you.
you have also to set the hardwareaccerlation full (settings/sound&multimedia or similar)

also, before installing the drivers, you can rename kx.sys to kx.bat, and kx98.sys to kx.sys in the setup folder, and let the setup app automatically install it for you
i might write up a batch file to automatically do this - i'll ask eugene if he wants me to

Chris, Gerald, I tried to do what you guys wrote but there is something strange: I don't have any KX98.sys in the mentioned folder. Eventually it is me that did the mistake in installing the whole thing even if I just clicked on the exe file.
I'm going crazy......any new advice???

I've always had trouble installing on older systems, the best way I found was to install from device manager and do a driver upgrade.
I know you have probably tried this already and I don't want to sound demeaning, but make sure you follow these steps exactly...
choose Install from list or specific location
choose Don't Search etc...
If the list of devices comes up, choose Sound, Video and Game Controllers
choose Have Disk...
Browse to the folder containing your kX installation, something like
c:\program files\kx project\3537\kx.inf
This should install the correct system and mixer files correctly.
I know this has been covered, but I thought I would try and simplify it for you.
Good luck, hope it helps.

Chris, Gerald, just an update:
I unistalled everything again plus did a deep uninstallation (even from autoexec.bat) of everything that has to do with SB. Now, in the kx folder I've found the file kx98.sys to be placed in the system32 folder in the place of kx.sys (of course after renaming it). Did it, rebooted but still no success: same initialization error and no mixwer or device from kx installation. If I go over to system hardware device manager I see that under audio, game there is kx either for the sb and for joystick but still error in initializing the audio card.
Any advice.....?

You may need to turn off System Restore, uninstall Creative Drivers, manually search for and delete Creative entries in regedit, restart the PC, use Driver Cleaner in safe mode and reboot to install kX Drivers. Upon sucessfully installing kX Drivers, turn System Restore back on. If Windows still automatically installs Creative drivers on a reboot, you have the option to reinstall Windows using a reformat of the HDD, cause something got really screwed up with your installation of Windows. If you must keep things on your HDD you can try an upgrade re-Installation of Windows, but after that if Creative drivers still install automatically after following the steps above, a reformat re-installation of Windows may be needed.

Thanks Thomasabarnes for your help too. At this point I can say that I don't think it is a creative drivers issue. Because I think I have succesfully uninstalled every one of them. I followed a post in this forum and did it. During boot I don't see any attempt from pc to install the sb drivers, not even for dos. And besides in the device manager under audio, video, game device I see the kx device either for joystick and for audio. Can we really say I have to format the whole hdd? I really hope not.
I think all it's left for me is to switch back to old creative cd and install it back......

Anything must have been overseen - kX runs perfect when installed correctly, so please, michaelm, post your complete system specifications included used OS so that we can do some help step by step (BTW: I have kX on 3 different machines and win98SE and XP running and no problems so far - this is for the 3537 version!!!). Please try to install the 3537 before you try to get the new functionality of the beta 3538. If 3537 runs stable, then you can do the next step, okay?!

I must have overlooked that you are able to install the kX drivers without windows trying to automatically install the Creative drivers again. No, you dont have to reformat your HDD since the Creative drivers are not installing automatically, now.
It's a good idea to do as TravelRec suggests. I'm sure we can help get you up and running with the kX drivers. Post complete system specs and try 3537 1st?

Not waiting - testing! Have you tried the 3537 version to install? Your system should work fine. Only a little issue is the old OS which will cause some problems with ASIO response and some sync problems when running Audio and MIDI together, but with a bit more latency it should work fine. I would suggest: uninstall all current audio drivers. Then download the 3537 full version and install it. Note everything your computer says to you during installation. If the message appears "...error initialize bla subsystem" reboot the system. Next time a message of "...names dynamically changed" will appear, then reeboot. During installation you need the windows CD to actualize some system files. You will be prompted if necessary. Make a step by step protocol and then post it here. It must work, no other way...

Travelrec, I jus got in my office and now I'm ready for this testing. I'm sorry I didn't mention it before but all my testing up to now were done right with 3537 version. And yes I had the same initialization error but the thing is that it happens all the time I reboot. So at the end it never stops to appear no matter if I reboot 10-20 times. About the win98 cd it is requested only when installing the joystick and game port drivers but I found them in the system32 folder without the need to insert the os cd.
If by the word protocol you mean to describe my step to step installation attempt, I'll try another time in a few minutes and will get back to you with details even if I think that I'll follow the same path I did so far and nothing will change........
Do you think I should try the 3538?

Travelrec, I did some new attempts but now it going worst than possible:
I tried to remove every device from the device manager that regards audio video game device. I let the pc detect a new pci device and it found kx audio sb 0222 asking me for the drivers. I let it search in the 3537 installation folder and everything seemd to go ok. He asked me for a reboot and I thought that it could be it!
Instead, now I cannot even reboot because the pc hangs when the desktop shows. That is it hangs even without showing any icons. Tried to see what's on pressing ctrl-alt-canc and all I could see was explorer, rundll32 and mmtask.
Now I'm desperate because everytime I boot in safe mode and remove the audio device it automatically finds the kx thing, complete the installation by himself and when I reboot I have the same hang at the same point......
This is incredible.....!!!!
