HL2; because of its interactivity, pyhsics, and it'll have many mods.

If it's just engines.. then I'm going for OpenGL and the Doom 3 engine. Because RTCW2 will be used for it along with Quake 4.

Far cry becuase the draw distance is mind boggling, and the foliage (grass, trees, plants etc) looks so nice (better than HL2 imho). Plus it was published, purchaced and completed about half a year ago

That's the way I feel about Far Cry, the more and more I see other games AFTER Far Cry come out, the more I give credit to Crytek and their engine. At first I thought HL2 would be greatly superior, but it's more like "meh" now. Far Cry was unfashionably early to the party

haven't even played HL2, but it gets my vote cuz i HATED botht the other 2 engines.
Far Cry was an amazing game..but a pretty poorly written engine. Doom 3 sucked, engine included
so HL2 wins by default

yea yea...lol
I simply meant that that game requires such massive amounts of hardware to run it nicely that it's kind of rediculous...same with doom 3
it looks AMAZING when ti works, but it takes a SERIOUS investment to get it workign that way

Its a close call really. Doom3 was such a hideous game its hard to look past the total boredom I feel when I load it now to benchmark some cards but it is an impressive engine, hopefully it can be used for more than darkly lit corridoors and brain dead zombies.
Farcry, has a wonderful engine which as PJ has indirectly stated needs quite a bit of firepower to run properly, but its silky smooth has great draw distance and handles vegetation better than either Doom3s or Half life 2's.
Half life 2 however has wonderful physics and has a powerful visual style to me, almost a surreal cinematic concept which works so well in execution, it also seems to me to be the smoothest on the most hardware so for that side of things it wins.
Im going to be totally lame and say all three, each have strengths and weaknesses, and I hope to see all three engines with further improvements in future games.

I think once Quake 4 comes around we can all more happily pass judgement on the doom 3 engine

Id say Half life 2 because the actual engine has the most gameplay potential, followed by Cry engine, with doom 3 not in the running. Any of the engines can have amazing visuals, it relies as much upon the concept art as the actual power of the engine. (Halo 2 for xbox IMO. Engine itself nowhere close to power of these 3, but there is a lot of armor and angles that are easier and more accepted as good looking, even though not nearly as technically advanced as say, Alyx. Any other game would still look more than a few years old on a Halo engine. Art needs to take advantage of the power!) I want fun games, even if its slightly less IQ.

Well I have no IQ! lol
I think the winner would have to be Far Cry, I am still yet to see water animate as well as the crytek engine displays. Far Cry is ahead of the games mentioned in this poll - simply due to the time it was released when focussing on the graphics and engine for its day.

That was a though choice since all the engines are great, but IMO HL2 has the best engine overall. Enviroment look good but they could be better, characters are the best i have seen so far with amazing facial animations, the physics are spectacular and it is not as demanding as Far Cry or Doom 3.
Btw i am looking forward to Stalker with it's X-Ray engine wich looks great too.

I expected HL2 to have a great engine to mod on. Will it be as accessible and easy as HL1? I don't know yet. In terms of the other games, it's really hard at least for voting again FC. Doom 3 I thought was a complete hunk of crap with too much trickery in textures, boring story and too many ripped off and unoriginal parts etc. Total write off game for me. Played it about 6 hours and never had the interest to go back. So repetitive, so predictable and spawning creatures 'still', come on... How people can look past a painted on tube set on the wall or painted on buttons on a wall, or even worse a painted on shadow on objects, is beyond me, but that's their way of seeing it. HL2 so far has been impressive as hell and the gameplay, fun since the beginning. I feel I am really moving along and hopefully I don't finish the game in a few nights..Farcry does have a good engine, just the support seems shaky and performance though it really got good in the last patch, how much better will it get?! I go with HL2, but in terms of graphics and stuff, sure it's pretty good. Top of the line? Ah, don't think so, but I don't see it affecting anyones interest and true, the physics are great. I am planning to do a mod now on HL2 engine. I was gonna go ahead with UT2k4, but now seeing HL2... hehe, it's HL2 for me baby!

doom 3 graphically is superior to HL2, i found many of the textures on the source engine to be very flat. and HL2's lighting effects are not as powerful as compared to doom 3, doom 3 over-exagerates it which pisses me off and HL2 doesnt which is good.
doom 3's netcode hasn't been put to heavy use, the multiplayer was meant to be crappy but it's possible in the future a mod or quake 4 will really boost it.

Half-Life 2's textures are amazing really, i cant help but look at the floors, wall and ceilings in game. They really are good, Doom 3 had coneheads, it's the small things that make a big difference and that's what has been focused on with HL2, no-one can possibly argue that any game has more life and atmos | |
