No it won't hurt gaming. Some customers (existing or potential) are disappointed primarily because it was an advertised feature that could lower CPU usage when decoding and encoding WMV format video, that now seems to perhaps not be possible to get working on some series. But for most users it won't be a big deal either way.

no it is a separate function. I don't give a rat's ass about that stuff anyways. As long as it plays games, I'm a happy camper.

its kindof sad though. I dont understand why a driver release couldnt fix it...actually I do, but its still stupid.

According to Nvidia, a new driver is going to fix the problem by the end of this month.

It will not affect your gameplay at all.

I heard that the driver simply disables the chip from doing anything at all, so it wont screw up DVD playback...or even affect it at all in any way.

The problem is that its a hardware problem, not a driver problem, so no driver can fix the actual chip itself.

Actually, the old thread shows that it's not even broken...some people just assumed it should do this because the 6600 did it. Nvidia integrates new technology into a newer card and gets punished for it? God, they get fucked from all ends don't they by you people?

Also, from what I understand there is a way to fix it through a driver release, or more add a new feature to an older VPU. There is no way to tell and speculation at this point does not do us any good. Let's wait until we see these drivers (which I so can't for) before we judge^_-

well the way to add new features to the VPU would be via bios flashing. Thats entirely possible, but very recently nVidia THEMSELVES said that it was something impossible to repair via driver release so thats why im guessing that my friend is right and the driver is going to disable the card from trying to use the function.

btw another thing is that this feature they've been talking about is on a seperate chip form the VPU, so unless it is ALSO programmable like the VPU, its not gunna work right.

well, like previously stated: if you're going to be doing video encoding and decoding, then you're not going to get the full features out of the card. For that, it would be best to move along into an x800 series card because they have the video encoder/decoder built into the board itself.

Actually screw that all together and get a Matrox of something made for the encoding and use it already.

So the programmable video "encoder" isn't made for encoding. Gimme a break, the damn thing is broken.

yes. it is broken.

this is a known fact.

its also never going to be as good as a real hardware encoder. Basically it is just there to help the process alittle and take some strain off your CPU. Thats all.
