Pissed Urgent help needed for 9800pro@xt

I went to bed last night whilst my computer was running win mx. I left the computer downloading all nite whilst the monitor was switched off. I woke to a computer this morning that was still running, but it would'nt do anything (no image on screen when I switched the monitor on again).
I manually restarted the computer, and as it started I was greeted with a slow beep beep, then 5 or 6 quick beeps. I have removed the 9800pro and installed my spare fx5200 and the computer worked fine. I've tried reinstalling the 9800pro but the computer doesn't do the usual single beep when it begins loading windows, nor is there any signal to the monitor and the series of beeps has also stopped, which I think means it's not loading past the bios. My card is only 6 or 7 weeks old and I have had no signs that the card was on it's way out. I'm especially surprised as it wasn't doing anything intensive, nor was it overclocked (apart from stock xt speeds which it has no problem runningas its a R360 core). Is the card fried? Could be the bios I used to flash the card?

Pissed

The card was running at 412/365, but i know it can handle 465/395 and a little more. I generally don't run the card overclocked apart from the bios flash, but as I said, I have the R360 core so these speeds aren't a problem. When I fit the fx5200 the comp boots up fine, when I refit the 9800 there's no image on the monitor and it doesn't boot past the bios. I've tried both dvi and vga leads

try a system restore that can do or a reformat. if you cant see the scree like seems the card is not workng then take the fan off and check your card and see if your core broken

The core is fine. Formatting the drive won't work 'cause the card doesn't work at all, I don't even see the bios screen. The monitor is getting no signal from the card. Could the bios flash be to blame? Even though it has worked fine 'til now?

just to make sure that it's the card itself and not some incompatability issue, throw the card in a different PC and see what happens.

I've tried that and was a no go. I'm think I'm gonna try flashing it back to the pro bios, just got to acquire a pci card first.

I want to point out your pro doesnt have the xt heatsink so you cannot assume it'll run at xt speeds. I would have used radlinker to overclock only when playing games - that would have been the ideal choice.

Hopefully you'll get this fixed however.

The card is fitted with an artic cooler rev 3. I've tried booting using a pci card whilst the 9800 is fitted. The 9800 is preventing the system from booting, I don't know why because I can't see the screen. Any more suggestions?

yes, take the 9800 out and leave the pci card in, get into your bios and switch it around so that the PCI card is your primary video card. that should make it so that you can boot w/ both installed.

I know the core (R360) is supposed to run at XT speeds, but what about the memory? Are the memory chips on these 9800Pros with the 360 core the same as on the real R360's? Just a guess really.

I'll never understand why people leave their PC's running all the time. This shortens the life of all the parts.

Would you leave your car running 24 hours a day? Uhh..no. The old saying that a reboot is harder on your pC than just leaving it running is pure BS...imho.

Trying to...that was the purpose of me asking if the memory on these latest 9800 Pros is the same Hynix or Samsung as the 9800XT's.
If the memory is not the same, then all the BIOS flashes in the world will not save someone from overcooking their card's RAM.
The core may be fine...but again...the memory.

I've tried setting the pci as my primary adapter, but I still get a blank screen and no boot. Apparently the hynix memory is good to run at 400mhz so the 365mhz shouldn't really have stressed it too much. That is the first time I've left the comp switched on for more than 5 hours. Any more suggestions? I've just been advised to clear the cmos and cold boot my card, but I'm not sure on how to do either>

Look on the board for the Clear CMOS jumper, or go to AsRock's site and download the manual for that mainboard. Power down the computer. If the clear cmos jumper has 3 pins (as usual) just use the jumper on it to short the other two pins that weren't shorted. (attempt to) turn it on. If it actually turns on (do any in clear mode?) turn it back off, and then replace the jumper to its origional position.

As for cold booting your card.. ??? A 'cold boot' is turning the system off and back on. Maybe they ment flashing it back to the pro bios?

Looks like your card is shot though man since it won't even work in another pc. Stick your nose to the card, and literally smell it. If it's burnt, many times you can get a wiff of that nasty silicon melting/electronic fire odor.

I've cleared the cmos made no difference. I've taken the hsf off the card and there is no smell of burnt out components. Someone else is having a very similar problem with an aiw 9800 in another thread. Do you think the probs could be related to the same thing?
