9800pro ocing -> stock cooling best?

got a 9800pro 128meg, i downloaded atitool just to see how it works, and i got the core up to 415 with the stock cooling solution, but i toned it down to 410. so far so good i suppose.
then i decided i will install my vantec iceberq copper sink on it, so i took off the stock cooling, cleaned off the thermal paste, applied for AS5, hooked up my iceberq, and got it up and running again. great, now to try atitool. on first run, 405 was the highest it would go without getting an error. no biggy, let the AS5 burn in. so i ran a loop of 3dmark2k1, played some games, etc...
that was 2 days ago, just ran it again, ~406.7 is the highest it'll go without getting an error.
so why exactly is this happening? i'd think a copper sink is much better than the stock aluminum one, and the fact that i'm using AS5 should be all the better.

any ideas/clues? should i let the AS5 burn in a bit longer? should i replace the stock cooling back on?

also, i did not remove the shim that's around the gpu, but the iceberq is making contact (i put AS5 on the core, then placed the sink on, moved it a bit, took it off and the GPU and the bottom of the sink both had AS5 on them at that point, confirming full contact)

in any case, any help or input would be nice. thanks.

It sounds like you are not getting a good fit on the new cooler to the GPU. Is it just a flat heatsink, or does it have a raised area on it where it should be contacting the GPU, like the stock cooler does? If it does not have a raised area, then I'd go back to the stock cooler, or try a VGA silencer or Zalman unit.

it's just a flat surface
the hsf only pushes 3.5cfm (which i guess is equal to stock cooling) but the all copper sink would be better than the aluminum one
but like i said, im certain it's making full contact because of the way the AS5 was spread out, i also looked at it, seems full contact is being made

currently running a continuous loop of 3dmark2k1 on the other pc, just to get the AS5 burned in, i know it needs quite a few hours of continuous strenuous operation to fully reach its potential, and 3d gaming is the only thing that will do this at that point, and since i dont have time to game for 4 hours, 3dmark is the next best thing lol

ill leave this running til about 9pm or so, when i get back from my final exam, then give the ocing another shot, hopefully ill break 410, as i think i should with what i'm using at the moment...

Maybe you put on too much or too little AS5....

well i put a little dab in the center of the GPU
not the first time i apply AS, been working with it since AS2.
just seems weird, also, when i removed the hsf after applying the AS5, it was nicely spread on the core, not too thick.

maybe the burn-in i'm doing now will help though...

GPU's give out ALOT of heat the thing is that copper doesn't move heat as fast as aluminium from the center of heat.
thats why thermalright with their solid copper heat sinks use the heat pipes, they help move the heat quicker from the center of heat. so by installing your copper heat sink you actually limited your GPU cause it can't get rid of the extra heat.

try the VGA Silencer - helped me get up to 470MHz core from 415Mhz with the stock heat sink.
also make sure you upgrade your mem's cooling. install mem sinks.

maybe i'll reinstall the stock sink with some AS5 on it, until i can afford to grab a vga silencer or something

hello,i had the same problem with as5,artic silver says that it will take arround 200 hours to get max performance out of as5.which i found to be true.i have not tested it on my bb ati 9800 pro but on my p4 2.8c the idle temp went from 29c to 25 and even lower if the room temp is arround 70f.and 49c to 45 and lower depending on what game im running.and i have only got arround 100 hours on my custom machine that i just finished.the as5 is also not supposed to cover the whole chip according to artic silver.i tried both ways and didnt really notice a difference but i changed to there meathod anyhow.excuse my typing and hope this helps.later

im thinking of getting the [COLOR=limegreen]"Arctic-Cooling VGA Silencer Rev.3"[/COLOR] or the [COLOR=deeppink]"Thermaltake GIANT II Highest Performance VGA Cooler"[/COLOR] to replace the stock fan on my ATI 9800 pro 128mb, i now run with stock cooling at 425/365 gpu/mem with no problems at all.
my question is regarding the memory cooling as i dont know much about cooling., do i have to get seperate cooling for the momory or is the VGA silencer/ Thermaltake GIANT II will cool both meme and gpu?

i have the vga silenecer rev. 3 and i believe it only cools the gpu. the memory doesn't get cooled so u would have to buy some good memory heatsinks for them...

Thermaltake Giant III is well worth it.

2x Fans, 8x Mem Heat Sinks, Front and Back Heat Sinks, and has Heat pipes this is one Cheap Easy Solution, still not quite as good as a Well modded CPU Fan/Heat sink.

The cooler you brought that Vantec one is useless.

here is the Artic Cooling VGA Silencer Rev. 3 only for $16. not sure how much it would cost in canadian. i got one on my 9800 pro and it keeps things very nice and cool, hence i can overclock it pretty good.
