Peltier

I'm thinking of adding a peltier to my system, can get a 172W one for AU$99 downhere, and i'm going to build my own psu for it.
Is there anything i really need to know before going ahead with this?

172w is WAAAAAAAAAY too weak. You'll need a 226w pelt if you're gonna cool your CPU. Try to avoid air cooled TECs as they are only marginally cooler than water cooled. Water cooled TECs will bring you load temps to 15C or lower. At load you can be about -10C to 0C. But when you get that cold condensation can be a b*tch.

Also, do not run a pelt off of a PSU. It strains the PSU too much. Only way i'd suggest using a PSU is by using 17v to run the pelt rather than 12.

Also, if you're really serious about this then you should dump the $80 for a dedicated Meanwell power supply.

Build a PSU? Um, what do you mean by that? You mean BUY a dedicated PSU? I know many people that bought PSUs such as Aspire and TTGI and killed them while they were running the TECs.

Peltier needs to be at least as twice as strong than your CPU watt ratting, example: Your OC-ed CPU makes 100W you need at least a 200W peltier. Whith that peltier you WILL have a condensation problems so you NEED to make isolation around CPU socket from both sides of mobo (similar to vapo chill metod) you will also need good watter cooling to cool the peltier, otherwise, your peltiers hot side will warm up the cold side and you get a problem. Thats all there is to it, of course, you need a good PSU, or the one you are planning to make.

for condensation issues, i was thinking having insulation aswell as silica gel ,which they use when packaging shows to remove moisture from the air

I had read into Peltiers about a year ago. At the time I had a Barton 2500+ and a Koolance system on it... Unfortunately, after all my reasearch, I had decided to drop the idea, due to the fact that I would need to buy a new waterblock. Constructing a PSU would be easy for me. And the sealant and Pelt itself didn't cost that much...
