Then wait a while longer, because you won't get anything that is a lot better for that kind of money today.

Just looked at the ad at Best Buy this am and there doesn't look to be anything vid-card wise that is much better than what you have now.
If the 9600 pro/XT goes on sale soon it would be the "best buy", the 5700 Ultra is on sale now for 189.xx and that card is comparable, but no ATI stuff on sale at the moment.
I would wait as long as possible...
You gotta buy from Best Buy, looks like, so what you get is gonna be 20-50 more than mail order unless there is a good sale (possibly with a rebate to bring the price down more)
Bummer, at the moment...

Oooohhhh,
That changes things a bit! Good! So, 200-350 total for a new vid card - that'll get you something nice, and opens up possiblities... They might have a better sale between now and then too! You have to buy a motherboard though?
You're timing is such that the new chips from ATI and Nvidia are coming soon (isn't it supposed to be March?), so there may be price drop on ATI or Nvidia cards soon as well - something to be said for waiting unless I'm wrong about the new chip release date.
In my opinion, the CPU you've got makes it worthwhile to get as good a card as you can, that shouldn't hold you back (very little), especially if you OC it (more or less without risk) to 3.0Ghz - if you're willing.
Do you have a preference for manufacturer or brand - ATI chip or Nvidia chip, Asus, Sapphire, Powercolor, BFG, whatnot...

ATI for sure but ive seen some nice sapphire cards, I found a nice mobo that i am upgrading, to give off my old mobo to an older comp and get a new processor so then i will have 3 comps and I am giving 1 to my parents. This stuff needs to be done, I have a p2 200 mhz that is dragging behind so bad, I am just gonna upgrade the 3 comps at 1 time

New ad will come out Sunday the 29th. Only a BFG 5700 Ultra card in it this week (at the stores here in North Carolina anyway...).
The sales in your area may be different, is your sale the same?

I would say wait another couple of months for when ATI and Nvidia's new products come out. You will see price drops on current products.
I would say the 9800 pro at 220 dollars is the best bang for your dollar.
