VIA (Gigabyte) Sata RAID (Controller) PROBLEMS

OK, On my Gigabyte 7VT600-P-L mobo, i have onboard VIA RAID/SATARAID available

well considering that i have 2 40gb hardrives now.. i figured i've not only slap in sata mode.. but raid as well..

The sata raid controller finds em... even knows the serial numbers on them....

but when i get into installing windows... i get as far as formating.... i can setup partitions no problem (multiple) but as soon as i select formating.... it goes from 0 to 100% in all of 3 seconds.... then sits there for about a minute.... at which point is says that it couldn't format.... and then can't see the hardrives let alone change partitions.... and will oventually result in a system crash...

Now i've tried UNRAIDING them and i get the same results...

The only thing i can think of cause a problem is.... i'm using IDE to SATA controler sorta clips....

These clips are from ABIT.... basically... you plug em into the 80 pin connector... and it converts it over to using another "floppy power cord" and the sata cable....

Both hardrives... with the same things.. down to a T!

Do i REALLY need a true sata hardrive to do this..... am i just completely wishfully thinking?.....

they work on my other computer for sata.... wtf?

and by the looks of it.... there isn't any RAID abilities through the IDE controllers.... now someone... please tell me.... why would they do that?.... i mean... even the cheap ABIT boards i've used had the ability to raid through all the 4 sepereate IDE channels...

What kind of hd's do you have? Also what converters do you have? There were some corruption problems with the original serrielle1 converters, issues were resolved with serrielle2.
I have both my maxtors on sata with the serrielle2 but I'm not in a raid array. I used maxblast3 to partition and set them up for sata use and for a xp installation. If you've got maxtors you might want to give maxblast a shot. plus you can recondition them that way first. I also removed the jumpers from the hd's. Maxtor also has maxblast 3 as an iso version that you can burn rather than fussing with making floppy's. I've no experience with raid so I'm of no help ther sorry.

Sigh where's my mind at ..been so long since I used via chipsets, head over here I think this thread might be of some help. Hmm I'm not sure but serrielle0 might be the originals.

This post seemed a bit less informative.

Your welcome, wish I could have been more helpful. Does your bios have the extra settings? Gigabyte used to hide the more advanced ones, you used to be able to access them by hitting ctrl&F1 at the main bios screen, perhaps there's some settings there that might help? Longshot but what the heck.

I got to that stage about three weeks ago.

After owning a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP Ultra for about 12 months with P-ata raid 0 on the promise controller (never ever had any problems). I decided to go S-ata on the Sil3112 controller. Well after having a very unstable XP Pro on the S-ata raid for two days it gave up the ghost and I was never able to re install it despite two weeks of trying.

Ditched the Ultra and got a GA-7N400 Pro 2 which was IMHO a sack of pooh and the S-ata was r e a l l y s l o w -so that got returned.

Finally gave up all together and went via 64 bit for the native s-ata. I could've gone intel ichr5 but I couldn't wait for the Prescotts to come out and I'm not exactly hearing great things about 'em.

Well... hrmm..... i figured i was just spoiled by Highpoint techs amazing abilities to diliver an amazing controller system.... as not only is setup a breeze.. but it's abilities to do things is amazing and the preformance is absalutely something to die for..... My AT7-MAX2 (abit) mobo support up to 10 drives...... 2 sata... the rest is IDE.... SATA and IDE can both be raided together...but the SATA will be slowed down of course..... All 8 channels available on the IDE are avaialble to be raided as well..... i was planning when i get a good chunk of money to either buy 4 IDE drives (40-80gb each) and raid them all as 0.... 4x the theoretical bandwidth should do well for a server.... Or spend a few bucks more and get a couple of sata drives.... a well... i'll live with just 2 hardrives as just two hardrives and wait to sell the mobo i have...
