Windows XP Woes
I just upgraded from win98 to win2k, to winxp, and I lose 16% of my 3DMark01 score from win98, and like, 14% from my win2k score (and I never tweaked win2k that much so...). Anyway, something must be terribly, terribly wrong. Any ideas? Thanks.

Different drivers and different OS'es are your biggest reason I would say for the change. XP is more of a resources hog than 98 but far better IMO nowdays.

From all I've read there's a general consensus that XP is slower than 9x. That's likely also true when compared to 2K.
It took me a LONG time to decide to move up my main system to XP Home. I'm glad I did now, but I still have 98SE on my older system that I still use.

Make sure you have all drivers up to date, defrag and turn off programs that run on the background...also tweak it and make sure you are using 256MB or more.

do you mean that you had 98 then did upgrade installs to 2k then xp or do you mean you had 98 installed then did a new install of 2k and then a new install of xp?
If youre doing upgrading then that can cause issues with how things run

ME to XP Upgrade
Just curious. I am considering upgrading today from ME to XP. Did you run into any problems with the upgrade itself. Did everything work when you got done and how long did it take to complete.
Thanks for your help. I'm a little nervous about this!

Both clean installs, all drivers updated, ect. They're was something about a refresh rate bug, could that be it? Oh, and I know XP is a resource hog, but it shouldent be that much worse then Windows 2k, not 14-16% anyway. Oh, and I don't have power comps like all of you guys, I know <5% is within the margin of error but not 15%-ish! Anyway, care to gaze into my POS sig (the OS's need to be updated, I now have win98 on my 10GB POS)

In addition to XP requiring more resources, it also runs backround processes well, managing the available resources more smoothly.
Just a guess, but I would say your system is being required by XP to do more simultaneously. Try turning off, say, system restore (take a look at www.blackviper.com too), among other processes you may not need, and bench again.
Gaming speed wise though - I was checking several months ago and the differences in FPS in games between 98, 2000, and XP was negligible then (2000 lagged them a bit, but not much - XP did surprisingly well at the time I thought).

Yes, this is why I know I did something wrong and it's not XP. And yea, I've already done all the blackviper stuff, that didn't help, I'm sure I installed something wrong or something.

make sure your running the latest service packs too!
2000 is faster then xp/me/98 it's just less user friendy.
I used to run it till xp came out.
as for the score migh be a little lower becouse the os is alot bigger and uses more ram. i'd reccomend a good gig of ram..
I can help you tweak if you would like ....

Yea, PM me about the tweaking neon cow boy. But I'm thinking I must have installed something wrong or something. I mean 16% is quite a bit. I'm gonna try fooling aroudn with refreshrate fixes and such. wish me luck.

I just realized what the difference is
I had assumed you were running a decent amount of memory on that system.
You need to upgrade to 512MB if your machine can handle it
XP only starts really shining at 512 and higher
Oh by the way with newer drivers you dont have to play with refreshrate fixes
In fact I recommend against it.
Almost all drivers have a built in Refresh Rate Override that you can turn on which will fix that issue

Yea, I found my drivers have a refresh rate override. Disabled will keep it at 60hz correct? And say I set it to 85 it would be at 85hz for games instead of 60? And, how would it decide all the different resolutions, like, my monitor can't do 85hz at 12x10...
Oh and yea, I'm pretty sure it's just that XP is "optimized" for faster/more memory (or at least I'm hopen) I'll be upgrading in a month or so, so it should be good then. Thanks.
