Damn DDC!!

Can anyone tell me what the use of DDC in monitors is?

I only ask as I got myself a new monitor in the summer. It broke and one of the failures was that it stopped transmitting DDC information to the graphics card. When I checked the display properties you get a message saying that DDC is not supported.
The faulty monitor was replaced and all was well again. Until this week. I had installed Falcon 4.0 and was playing about with settings etc and started a game. The game took forever to load up and I thought nothing of it until I went into the video control panel and discovered that the control panel had options to set the monitor to resolutions not supported by the monitor. So I checked the displays panel in the advanced screen and lo and behold, it was showing that DDC is not supported.

I removed the driver and reinstalled to no avail, I then rebuild the system and this made no difference, so it looks like DDC on the monitor is not working. The only thing that upsets me is that the monitor sometimes tries to go into resolution/refresh rate combos that it doesn't support (usually when playing a game for the first time) and I don't like it.

So am I really missing out on something and should I try to arange a warranty swapout? Is it worth it?

DCC is not neaded... and will be killed instanty when using some form of Refresh Fix.... Older monitors don't have DCC.... DCC is basically for plug n play use... someone not knowing how to completely set up the res.... refresh rates..... (sorta like a saftey setting)..... Omegas drives i think remove or disable DCC....

interesting - thanks guys.

Although I'm half tempted to get the monitor swapped under warranty anyway, using the DDC failure as an exuse. This is the replacement for my original monitor and I must say that the image quality is p*ss poor. I will never buy a monitor from these people again. (I hate the blurred picture in the centre of the screen and the wierd checkerbox effect in the bottom right and top left of the screen.)

Ugh. Yeah, I'd definitely try to get that swapped.
