I live in CT. My new server I just got setup went down a little while ago. (its in NYC) Some people in CT I know have already lost power. Its slowly spreading, and they don't know why.

All I had was a blip...so brief, my computer didn't even immediatly freeze (no UPS), though it ended up slowly falling to pieces. Quite a strange ocurrence, but apparently my part of CT was pretty lucky in the alternates available for the power grid.

Here in Mississauga, just west of Toronto, power came back on at 12:15am this morning!
I went for a drive last night and felt like I was driving in Europe on those dark side roads...
Officials are urging people to stay home today...you know what that means?

My power came back on at about 6AM EST, at least that's when I woke up and noticed that it was on. Just got internet service back (about 9AM, we have DSL). It was probably on earlier, but I had to play with the router a little to get it to connect.
Luckily for me, I'm not spoiled by air-conditioning(read: don't have AC) to have been affected by a lack of power, except for a case of PC DT's .
My bro always has solar-panels charging gel-cell batteries, so we had TV all night, even if it was only a little 4inch LCD TV. We went out on the porch and let whoever was interested watch the news with us.
When power went out yesterday, I was out in my car, ended up not getting half the stuff that I wanted to do done.
I live in Cleveland. What I thought was stupid is the fact that we have 2 power plants less than 5 miles away, yet we had to be without power because of Niagra falls?!?
What a high quality power grid we have here in the Northeast, eh?
Hey Stormy, that avatar is hilarious.

After about a 14hr outage here in Ridgewood, NY all power is back. This was the single greatest blackout in American history effecting over 50 million people. For hours about 80% of NY had no power, not to mention NJ, CT, OH, MI and south Canada.

Watch it ....... the problem was NOT in NIAGRA FALLS
And as a matter of fact Rayder our hydro service in Ontario far exceeds that of Watertown, NY ... remember the Ice storm ???

Yeah, the problem is with de-regulation and the privatization of the power companies. The equipment isn't up to the task of sending power from one place to the other- we had enough power the whole time, the system just didn't do what it was supposed to do to stop the domino affect when one part of the grid went out..
What I heard:
Niagra Mohawk (where I pay my electric bill) was bought out a couple years ago by an English company named (I believe) National Grid and about 800 people were fired, mostly maintenance people. They raised the rates (by up to 300% in some cases), then pocketed the money saved by firing all the maintenance employees. Deregulation was supposed to drop our power bills and make our power system more robust- yeah, that worked. This is a big problem that many people are to blame for, mostly our own inadequate government. This was a wake up call- We need to upgrade our antiquated electrical power grid.
Mostly an annoyance for me- the power went out, AC went off, it got really hot in here, so I went to sleep.
When I woke up, the power was back on. Actually the Niagra power plant never went off line and provided power to most of the people who had it when it did come back on. It's funny how everyone said it was a lightning strike at Niagra Falls at first- I live a few miles away- there was no lightning in the area, it was a clear blue sky- even the President of the US repeated this. Oh well, power came back on quick for me- for millions of people, the situation wasn't that good. The sad thing is that this whole thing was completely avoidable.
