If you ask me the PS3 was a complete failure, the only thing it's being really used for atm is Blu-Ray (PS3 owners of DH will be crying foul play at this point, if so, sorry) and not for gaming like it was intended. If it was cheaper then it would probably be more worth it's while but for me a PS3 doesn't look like a smart choice.
Lack of games doesn't help, why did sony have to switch to this fancy new Cell processor anyway? I understand it would offer very good performance but why not just stick with dual/triple/quad core cpu's like the xbox?
and i'm ranting because i'm hungry as hell

could be better..... if more dough was focused on the GPU rather than Blu-Ray we'd have a 360 killer...... sadly it just aint

Sony is finally starting to go in the right direction in the last couple firmware updates, but besides MGS, no outstanding exclusives. Hard to tell if Sony can turn it back around or not.

If the ps3 didn't have a blu ray player we wouldn't even be having this discussion; everyone would already be predicting sony's doom.
Sony is lucky that blu ray caught on, although I still don't know anyone who wants to watch blu ray movies except to justify their expensive ps3 purchase. They've done a wonderful job making the cheapest blu ray player on the market. All they had to do was sell every single one of them at a loss! I wonder why the competition didn't think of that?

It depends on ur point of view
If the PS3 is viewed as a bluray player, its been a down right sucess
The cheapest and the best on the market
But if its as a video game console,it hasn't done anything special
it doesn't have the game's library of the 360(or the dev support) nor does it have the novelty/fun factor of the Wii
The only 2 games that i really found interesting so far for the PS3 was Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4
For the 360,there are a lot of systems that will sell a system, and keep users happy
And i believe that cross-platform titles more often than not, look and play better on the 360
And Sony were really late in giving PSN anything worthwhile to compare to live
And i'd take XBOX live(yes at $40-50 a year depending on where one buys his subscription card) over PSN anyday
But thats just my opinion, others will have theirs

They won the HD format war ensuring blu ray will be the offical HD disc format for years to come. They've also just annouced a movie download service at E3 in which you can either rent or buy movies in SD or HD. They have their bases covered if downloads do eventually take over, which i doubt will happen in Europe anytime soon until BT start upgrading the lines.

I think there are too ways to look at it. As a games console it is still behind the Xbox 360, however I think with a few amazing exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4, Ferrari Challenge (one of the best racers in a few years) and the upcoming Resistance 2, SOCOM, God Of War 3, Little Big Planet (amongst the many), that this will change.
If however you look at the bigger picture and take into consideration the quality of the output as well as native support for bluray movies out of the box (with great quality) you can see the benefits if you are into your media.
Lets not forget you can easily change the hard drive to something larger up to 500gb (check out my sticky in the gaming forum) and you have support for xvid, divx, wmv (as well as a free tool to do a passover quick transcode of mkv). You can stream these, or copy to HD in single mode or in batches with the very impressive dash. Don't like the dash? then install linux as a dual boot!
Then with upcoming goodies like this PlayTV set for September 10th UK launch I would say it is right now an untouchable media center. The 360 is far too tied into WMV to be of any use whatsoever.
I use mine as a media center in the main room over my network to a 52 inch 1080p tv and you can even hook up a wireless keyboard like the logitech dinovo mini which has native PS3 support http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/ke.../3848&cl=gb,en - so you can use the normal sony remote or the funky logitech one for surfing and media work if you want !
Overall I think the PS3 is the best console out there, but if all you do is game on it, the Xbox 360 is still the strongest. The situation in 3 years time? I think thats the interesting thing to think about.
One thing I do find amusing is the fact that we see people who "hate" Microsoft for being who they are, or people who hate Sony for the same thing. I mean we have 360 lovers slagging off Sony for a lack of titles and Sony lovers slagging Microsoft off for huge failrates and other things (not here, just a general observation).
Hey its just hardware, im not really into the badge deal, just what it does for me at the end of the day.

Gaming Polls
Being the curious type I am, I decided to read the actual polls. They seemed to be consistent, until you get to the party ID at the bottom.

Re: Playstation 3: flop or success so far?
Total fail I'm afraid.
Quality wise PS3 games have been fantastic, the hardware is excellent and overall it is easily the best console of this generation.
But that hasn't helped, Sony have went from topping the sales charts with PS1/PS2, to trailing in 3rd with PS3. Not only have Sony lost $2BILLION since project PS3 (That figure is partly offset by PS2s strong sales, which shows how much money they have chucked into this), a sum they wont get a return on, but it has nearly crippled Sony financially, especially now.
Sony need to be careful here, especially in the US/Europe where Microsoft have took the gloves off, cutting the price of the 360 to stpuid levels, they cannot afford to follow suit, another hit to the bottom line will literally mean they will pull a SEGA.
Sony need to learn how Nintendo coped during the GC era, make great software, get a great tie ratio, and settle for modest rpofits, rather than risking the ship by becoming laden with debt to create a userbase, if the PS3 sees a price drop this year I feel we will not see a PS4, for the cost will bring Sony down, especially when no-body will be there to give Sony money to carry on, damn Bank crisis.

Bill Gates team is working on trumping blu ray obviously not in the next few years but maybe 5 years. I think by that time everything will be 3D projection Star wars style

Re: Playstation 3: flop or success so far?
Usefull info , now i'll tell my bro not to waste his time on such an expensive piece of equipment. Its always like sony to have a good product but way too expensive to afford and having the games being expensive and rare too doesnt help.

Re: Playstation 3: flop or success so far?
TBH the second hand games market for the PS3 is great you can get some great games for under a tenner off the top of my Head Assasins creed , Uncharted Drakes Fortune , Resistance Fall of Man , Grand Turismo 5 and Motorstorm are all available for around a tenner and are all very decent games
I am more than happy with My PS3 now me and the lad play for hours together and the film quality for BluRay is brilliant
a solid and yes expensive purchase but i have to confess i think its worth it

Re: Playstation 3: flop or success so far?
Well a slow start, no doubt about that, but it's picking up speed real fast. Not only has Sony managed to make some great updates of the firmware for the PS3, but the amount of good game titles are really growing and if you take a look at upcomming titles for PS3 and exclusive titles, it's brilliant.
The quality of the PS3 is supreme, way better then 360, but off course the 360 is also a cheaper system. And actually price is the only thing, which keeps PS3 for really shining. At the current price I'm will not call it expensive, as it's good quality, you can easily upgrade your HDD cheap and all PS3 games are region free, plus online-gaming on a PS3 is free, let's not forget about that And you get a supreme Blu-ray player and a DVD player with great upscaling, so calling it expensive is wrong.
BUT if you don't need a blu-ray player, i get why some feel the price is to high and it would make a lot of sense if Sony made a 80gb pack for around 300$ and maybe even a 80gb pack with a HDMI cable AND Little Big Planet for 325$, that would sell a lot.

Re: Playstation 3: flop or success so far?
My vote was for the "Failure" category, but not for reasons that some of you may realize.
No I don't own a PS3. And I neither love, or hate, Sony. Regardless of what they did to SWG, or tried to do to the music publishing industry... etc. Instead I believe Sony could have done so much better with the PS3 if they simply had better management. And IF the people in charge understood Economics!
However, since that is NOT the case. And since they are unlikely to change, short of being forced into chapter 11 bankruptcy. I won't waste any more of our collective time in a fruitless discussion.
