directsound quieter than wave

hi

i encountered this hmm.. not a big problem, but confusing thing:
in winamp, the directsound output is quite a lot quieter than wave out.
the difference is significant, especially when i have output volumes set for
DS and i play an AC3 move (for example). when i forgot to turn it down, i have
a loud surprise sometimes.. yes could just use waveout output in winamp,
but what about games? oh, and the directsound out for winamp has fading
included (YES.. i could install a dsp plugin.. but that's only a partial solution).
anyone has a clue ?

System Specs

From Winamp.com Forums, PP's out_ds FAQ 2.2:

Q: Why is DirectSound always quieter than waveOut ?
A: On win2k/xp, changing waveOut volume seems to change global wave volume setting, while DirectSound has independent volume control; in other words - you play with waveOut, set volume to 50%, you get 50%, then you switch to DirectSound, set volume to 50%, and get 25% of your max volume. Solution: don't use waveOut and set wave volume to max in windows volume control.

i've expected such a reply (unfortunately, it's not what i wanted..)
what about loud ac3 ?
the difference between ac3 and DS is still huge.
btw i have a feeling, that maximum of all volume settings with DS is still not as loud as
even 50% of wave..
is there a way to amplify the ds ?
