What Should I do with this car?
Sitting in my driveway is a broken down 1999 VW Beetle. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the darn thing. If it was in running condition with everything fixed I could get maybe $4000 for it. However, the computer, throttle body, airconditioning and power windows are all shot. The only way to get is fixed is to have it hauled on a flatbed truck to a VW dealer 65 miles away and spend $2000+ on repairs. The body and interior are in great condition
Should I just junk it and sell it to a salvage yard? Ebay? Local classifieds? I'm not really sure who would buy something like that.

"Does it Blend?" comes to mind.
Actually, scrap metal is fetching decent prices nowadays, so that's an option. I'd probably place an add in the paper and see if you get any takers. Just be honest and don't expect to get a ton of money.

Donate it. I'm sure you love tax breaks and tax refunds. You'll get the money back in the end.

I agree
donate the car..
I learned more about VW cars when I tore apart a knackered old LUPO after I blew a tuned one up. I really appreciate what it takes to work on these beasts and get them running.

Will someone please just let the Beetle die...
there are sooooo many better cars out there..
even an old Vette is a better car...
what is this fascination with one of the ugliest cars on the road anymore.

Hey, if I could get a new tranny, this car would be worth keeping, but other than that, I agree it's a POS. >.<

Why not get an estimate for repairs? I mean if its going to cost $2,000 to repair. Get it repaired then flog it for $4,000. You are then $2,000 up for a new motor. Unless of course you don't have the $2,000 in the first place.

It's an automatic. The tranny is fine as of the last time I drove it.

You can buy the whole car for $1000, arrange your own shipping, and you have an entire parts car. Then I can have my driveway back for my other cars

Almost 88k on it. That last time I drove it the shocks were fine, which was over a year ago. Tires are good, brakes might be due for a change.

Same thing as giving it to the Mythbusters.
That would be the coolest thing ever, getting featured on their show. Come up with a myth about VW Beetles then offer to let them test it on your car

Re: What Should I do with this car?
Update on the broken VW: I gave it to a friend of mine. He's short on cash and jumped on the opportunity to get it running, which cost $1000, and lucky for him he sold it immediately for $2500. Two days after it was sold, the VW broke down again at the cause of a $750 sensor. As far as I know the a/c and power windows are still inoperable as well. So yes, this car was ready for the scrap yard, no matter how nice it looked. I'm glad to be rid of it and I gained garage space for my Mustang since winter is coming very soon
