Set Master Mixer as the default device for audio playback in the Windows Control Panel.
Click on the Speaker Setup button in kxmixer, and set it to 5.1 mode, with Surround On.

There is an issue in 3541 that effects the routing of stereo only audio sources, which in turn effects the upmixing ability of those sources (under the default DSP config). Use the following workaround to enable upmixing of stereo sources:

Open the DSP window.
Connect the top two pins of FxBus to the 5th/6th pins of xrouting.
Connect the 5th/6th pins of FxBus to the top two pins of xrouting.
(i.e. swap the connections that the above two pin pairs are currently using).

Again, use this workaround for stereo audio sources only (use the default routing when listening to multichannel audio sources).
