What should I upgrade next?
Alright, my (custom build) machine has:
4GB RAM
2x nVidia GeForce 8500 GT's
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+
No Soundcard (still have default)
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
So, what's the weakest link in this lineup? I personally think that the CPU is what's holding it back, but I wanted some input before I blew $150 bucks on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+.

I'd get an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition and clock it a bit. It's made for overclocking as one can simply raise the multiplier and it costs much less. Either that or save the money for a bigger rebuild.

Why do you think its the CPU? Is it games you're struggling with? If so which ones?

Yes, I'm upgrading this to improve gaming performance, and the graphics of CoD4 can be run at medium alright, but high slows it down a bit, and I think it's just the CPU having trouble processing all the data. And as for the graphics cards, I know they aren't the best, and I didn't even know they released a 9600 yet, I only knew about the 9800's.

your CPU can hardly be called a bottleneck, it still has power to run games today...... not max or anything but they can run better with a new card

Given that setup....video cards most definitely, thats the choke point of your system right now.
