HELP!! setting up cpu voltage!
hi
i have asus P5E-VM HDMI mb and a intel C2D E4500 processor.
my system have failed at 400x8 but it looks stable at 400x6 and it is the current configuration and in cpuz it show that processor currently using 1.184v. i have raised it 1.35 but it does no good at 400x8.
please help how much voltage should i increase or is this is the limit of this processor!

Try something like 9x350 and see if that's stable, then work upwards from there. Many would happily throw a higher voltage at it but I prefer to find a sweetspot. It's up to you and how good this particular CPU at overclocking. You may also have to raise the voltage for the system bus and/or northbridge chip if the motherboard has such settings. 0.1V or 0.2V extra is safe there.

it does'nt post at 9x350 but it boots at 333x9 but fails when loading windos.
and now im going to try the voltage option.
and let you know the result.

pls tell me where to start from the northbridge chip voltage, in the bios it sets on auto.
it has another options of northbridge voltage referance.
NOTE: this mb is using G35+ICH9R chips
what is the correct voltage of this chips?
pls help!

I had a peek at the manual and the non-CPU default voltages seem to be the lowest possible setting. That's logical because there's no use for undervolting parts of the motherboard. The voltages named in the manual as FSB Termination Voltage and North Bridge Voltage may be necessary to raise a little when using high CPU system bus clocks. But my guess by those results described above is that it's mostly the CPU itself that is the limiting factor.
I see there's also a setting for CPU Spread Spectrum, a feature that can reduce electromagnetical interference inside the system. A side effect is that it can also make it a little bit more difficult for an overclocked system to retain stability, so try disabling it.

try putting more volts into the NB chipset, then if that doesnt work
try the FSB termination voltage,
but most importantly, look at the voltage monitor in the BIOS, the readings are more accurate than the inputted volts.

i think for this proc 8x400 or speed of 3.2/3.3 is the sweetspot, though im not sure about the voltage. is it too high for this proc to running on 1.41v, temp shows on idle at 40 and at full load near 60-61 at stock cooler. i think its need a cooler.
pls tell me about the voltage should i lower it?

thanx for your tips kris23, but it seems mkk was right about this processor. by spending 2 days evulating this mb proc combo i found that this proc doest not run at 2800~2850 no matter what volt i set.
so i think i will be doing a 3ghz(8x375) at 1.3625 till i get a new proc that does overclock better.

Now, if i set the multiplier to 8 it boots and i can load vista, but at the prime95 it fails.
so my idea is if i can run it at 7 multiplier i can decrease the volt and have stable system.
but i want the increased FSB because it increases the memory perfomance and lowers the latency.

i try those settings, but no luck man.
it doesn't even post.
this is the settings i also tried.
cpu voltage to 1.4875v
NB voltage ref to .67 [.61x,.67x]
the highest CPU voltage Ref is .63x but it
doesn't work.
ram is not a problem because i was able to load windows at the freq
and volt in here.
this time i try to raise the multiplier to 8 but it doesn't help either.
and the dram is not posible at 950 at this FSB. there was 901 and 1000, i set it to 901.
i had a E2160 and it was good overclocker then this processor. i was able to do a 2.60 at default volt.
if you want the full details of the bios overclocking settings pls let me know.

what is the highest CPU FSB you have ever overclocked on this CPU,
and what was the Core and NB voltages you were using for the overclocked ?
if the CPU takes a whole lot of vcore to be able to get a decent overclock speed, then either the CPU just not a good overclocker or the system board has a large vdrop problem.

the highest FSB was 425 and multiplier was 6 and voltage was CPU: 1.2500v, NB: 1.25v
and the highest speed i get was 333x11 all volts on lowest except CPU at BIOS: 1.4875v and at CPUZ:1.45-1.4725.
i think the processor is taking lot of volts. but at my current settings are
336X9 at 1.3625 at BIOS and 1.29-1.35 at CPUZ and it runs stable at orthus and prime95.
im really surprised that this processor runs at 400x8 with 1.4625v stable but not
at 400x7 with 1.4625v (not even post)
strang!! huh
while i see lots of success of overclocking this processor at the internet and to 3.6ghz with less then 1.45v.
i think this processor has a factory fault! (Mine)
and it says core is Conroe-2M at Everest CPUID and Conroe at CPUZ and Allendale at RightMark CPU Clock Utility.
im really Confused!!!!

no, it's not a factory fault procesor, lol. it's just luck of draw.
so, 425 MHz FSB was the highest FSB you have ever achieved with this CPU,
that's not bad at all, remember, the CPU runs at a default FSB of only 200 MHz.
E4500 is in Intel Core 2 Duo Desktop Processor family

i'm guessing it's more of a motherboard's BIOS problem than a CPU...
your system should run stable with the CPU multi 7x setting as well if BIOS setting is right.

overclocking is about learning, noone can tell you how to do it right everytime.
in many times, even you cannot tell yourself precisely what will happen, it's always a trial and error process.
but you must enjoy it and won't stress yourself over it.
try it again tomorrow, who knows, you may get a better overclock.

if you can afford a new CPU try a Core 2 Duo E8000-Series, E6x50-Series, they appears to have high FSB overclocking headroom.

Yeah given those settings not working for you, I would say buy a new chip....sounds like you got a dud, or that board just doesnt like it. I know that particular board does exceptionally well with FSB with a Q9450/X3350 Quadcore, it hits over 450fsb with ease and low volts......
I thought about getting one, except for the fact that it only has 1 PCIE slot and I have 2 cards

The E4500 is intel's stab at catering for a low~mid end market, i'm running the same one lol. hence why it doesn't overclock well at all. i've got zilch experience OC'ing though because i'm too scared of killing something lol.
I'd recommend getting hold of an E6600 or Q6600 if you can, those are still the best OC'ing C2s about apparently.
