Sixty years on, the country is facing a choice of two futures: it can be Jewish or democratic - but not both

As far as I know the state of Israel is democratic state. So that quote isn't so accurate that I would hope from journalist.

Theocracy has worked in Tibet but I think that their system was the only one that worked fine.

A long, serious article on the subject. I'm impressed.
There are of course degrees of democracy, like in ancient Greece or old South Africa. I wouldn't call either of those democratic states in a modern sense and todays Israel is not far from the Apartheid state. I'd also argue that the one state that breaks the most international laws and defies all UN resolutions might not be fit to be called a modern democracy.

Mkk@ Does Hezbollah or Hamas follow the UN rules??? They have been doing strikes to Israel out side of Israel borders. Anyway this mess stared back when the Brits gave up their mandate for Palestine. There was reasonable plan for the land distribution for the Jewish people and the Muslims but the Arabs didn't play ball.

Most of the rockets launched from Gaza target Sderot, a working-class city whose residents are primarily descendants of Moroccan, Kurdish Jewish and Soviet immigrants. Sderot has endured thousands of attacks since the 2005 disengagement from Gaza, and they are ongoing. On the day Maclean's visits, a faint red-alert siren sounds as we drive into the city. There is no time to react before a muffled crunch is heard, the sound of a distant explosion.
|
So if we would go by all the international laws then there should be war in there. And we all know that modern warfare is what it is.

Lol, sorry man but I'll stick to the topic. ;)
I believe a two state solution could still work even if the recent years of talk in one direction and actions in another has certainly put peoples expectations on that down a lot, which might of course fit the plans or wishes of the military.

It's as democratic as the soviet union was. 99.9% of people voted with AKs on their heads and there was only 1 candidate to choose from.

Was it not Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill that came up with the term United Nations...?
