scan your system for virus, and download Process Explorer
Then try following this advice... System process is taking over 50% of CPU time - microsoft.public.windowsxp.general | Google Groups

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running,
D-click on the "System", and go to the "Threads" tab and click on the CPU column, and take a screenshot of the Process Explorer window and post (like my example)

How's it going, have you found what you were looking for?
many times that gives a clue, and helps you solve this kind of problem. if you can identify the file in question, and to see whether it is a known system file or driver, and then also, you know where the problem comes from and sometimes you might be able to find a solution.

Other beauty of Process Explorer: it lets you kill individual handles and threads of a process without nuking the rest of it. Very handy when I had to remove a trojan that attached itself to explorer.exe when it ran. A version of Process Explorer is built into Vista.
