DivX and Avivo

When I use Avivo to convert video file to DivX, the resulting clip will show the DivX logo at startup. I suppose that this is the proof that a 'real' DivX codec is being used by Avivo.

However when I check the file with MediaInfo , it will tell me that a rather old DivX 4 codec was used. The current DivX codec is version 6.8.

I now wonder if ATI uses a special version of the DivX codec that can use the hardware acceleration of the ATI graphics, and if the current 'normal' DivX 6.8 codec will also use this hardware acceleration.

Does anyone know?

The logo is shown to tel you that the content is decoded with the DivX codec. You can disable it in the decoders configuration utility.

Avivo encodes to the older DivX 4 format.

So I assume ATI took the (open) source of the Project Mayo DivX 4 codec, and altered the code so that the codec would use the ATI hardware. This would suggest that the present DivX 6.8 codec does not support the ATI hardware acceleration.

I had hoped that the present DivX codec also can use the ATI hardware acceleration. Obviously a lot has happened between DivX 4 en DivX 6.8, and it is a shame we can't use the new codec with ATI hardware acceleration to make use of the new developments.

As far as I know AMD has licensed the DivX codec and made some modifications to it and embed it to the converter. And now days there is not really need for hw accelerated video encoding since the dual and quad cores are becoming mainstream and they got more than enough power for Video encoding. Note that DivX supports multi core cpu's.

I don't know if AMD has licensed the codec. Keep in mind that this version (4) of DivX was still open source, contrary to the present versions of DivX. Of course dual and quad CPUs have a lot of power, however GPUs can do encoding far more efficient. In fact the trend is to use the power of GPUs for a lot more than just gaming. Both ATI and Nvidia are releasing APIs to use the power of their GPUs for all kind of scientific calculations. AMD is even planning a CPU and GPU combination on one die. Even now a normal PC with a couple of graphics cards can replace an expensive specialized super computer for certain calculations.
