9800gtx over the 7950gx2 ?

Guys, I'd like some opinions on this. I currently own a 7950gx2 and I've been looking to upgrade. When reading reviews on the 9800gtx it's not really that impressive compared to other 8-series cards.

However, with the lowest prices at 230 euro's (Club3D) it does become tempting again.
What do you guys think? Is the performance boost worth it? I could wait for the next REAL highend card based on the new gpu but that might take a while and when it delivers it will probably cost an arm and leg... Do you think waiting for a custom 9800gtx with more onboard memory would be worthwile?

The rest of my system: p5b mobo, e6600, 2gb ram, 400W PS (New power source??)

the 7950GX2 cant register to the performance of any of the mainstream or high end card anymore......

any card from 3870 and up is a reasonable choice.... 9800GTX is very good too but a 9800GX2 is better.

I don't really know how tempting the price is. How much does an 8800GT cost where you are? Here in Canada, the 9800GTX is a almost twice the price, so clearly the 8800GT is a better buy. If it's a matter of 40-50 or so Euros in difference, I would personally go with the 9800GTX. There are also claims that future drivers would improve the performance.

Just for 230 Euro for a Geforce 9800GTX! That's a good price. At my place (Holland) they sell it for around 309 Euro (XFX). The Geforce (EVGA) 8800GTX (G80) costs here around 229 Euro. The 8800GT (EVGA) costs here 189 Euro. the (EVGA) 8800GTS (G92) costs here 219 Euro. And the 9600GT 159 Euro.

Go for it if you need the extra speed, for example you want to play Crysis at a decent speed in higher settings. Another game that probably will need a faster videocard is Assasin Creed PC. Otherwise wait for the newer cards like the GT200 from Nvidia or ATI-AMD RV770. All other games using the Unreal III engine, Source engine, id Tech 4 (Doom3) engine etc. perform fine with the Geforce 7950GX2.

Tcman, I'm Dutch too.
Have a look here: GeForce 9 Serie | Tweakers.net Pricewatch Prijzen

Anyway, I think I'll wait for a bit to see some new rumours on the upcoming GT200 cards. I've read the 9900gtx will be a single gpu card with 9800gx2 performance. Now that would be a nice step up from a 7950gx2
Seeing as thought the 9800gx2 costs 400-450 euro's I would be willing to pay that for a 9900gtx if it has reasonable power consumption and noise levels.

i highly doubt the card will beat a 9800GX2.....

probably come close to it in lower resolutions but not beat it.

just look at G92, it was to give more than double 8800Ultra performance..... after many evolutions of the core (8800GT, 8800GTS 512, 9800GTX) it BARELY matched it at half the price....

that was the purpose of the g92. equal performance to a 8800GTX (the 8800GT did this) and 8800 Ultra (the 8800GTS 512MB did this) for half the price.

anyways, for the OP, the 9800GTX will be a big difference in performance to your current 7950GX2 card. IMO, the 9800GTX is reasonably priced for rather excellent performance. they are in the $350 USD range. they're a great buy!

i just benched my 7950 GX2, and there is a huge difference between the two. It will be a very good upgrade. But there is not much difference between 9800 GTX and 8800 GTS 512MB.

right, that's because the 9800GTX is just a re-vampped 8800GTS 512MB as it should have been when it first came out.

Good Advice...

I'd wait for the 9900 to come out. Even if you decide not to get one, all the other cards should drop in price a bit.

IMO, the 99xx series cards from NVIDIA will just be another refresh of the g92 chips.

Well, as it looks now the GTX280 is going to be the real deal so I'm glad I waited.
Hope it will be reasonably priced though and I hope my E6600 @ 3.2Ghz will be enough...
